Glen McKinnon
Glen McKinnon (born 16 December 1937) is a Canadian educator and politician from Manitoba. He represented the federal electoral district of Brandon—Souris in the House of Commons of Canada from 1993 to 1997 as a member of the Liberal Party. He was elected in the 1993 Canadian federal election, then fell into third place behind Progressive Conservative candidate Rick Borotsik and Reform candidate Edward Agnew in the 1997 federal election. He previously ran as a Manitoba Liberal candidate in the district of Arthur-Virden in the 1990 provincial election, coming second to PC incumbent Jim Downey. 1990 Manitoba General Election
The 1990 Manitoba general election was held on September 11, 1990 to elect Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Province of Manitoba, Canada. It was won by the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party, which took 30 out of 57 seats. The New Democratic Party finished second with 20, while the Liberal Party fell from 21 to 7. Background The 1990 election took place against the backdrop of the failed Meech Lake constitutional accord, which sought to clarify Quebec's position within Canada. The accord, which was signed in 1988, required passage by the federal government and the ten provincial governments before June 23, 1990 to become law. Virden is a town in southwestern Manitoba, Canada. Oil was first discovered in 1951, and Virden has since come to be known as the "Oil Capital of Manitoba". History Virden has its roots as a farming community known as Gopher Creek. James Erwin Downey (born August 10, 1942) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1977 to 1999, and served as a cabinet minister in the Progressive Conservative governments of Sterling Lyon and Gary Filmon. Early life Downey was born in Melita, Manitoba. He served as an Air Cadet, and received an Agriculture Diploma from the University of Manitoba. Before entering political life, he worked as a farmer and auctioneer. Manitoba politics Downey was first elected to the Manitoba legislature in the provincial election of 1977, scoring a fairly easy victory in the southwestern rural riding of Arthur (generally regarded as a safe seat for the party). Arthur-Virden is a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. It was created by redistribution in 1989, combining the former constituencies of Arthur and Virden. Arthur-Virden is located in the southwestern corner of the province. It is bordered to the north by Riding Mountain, to the east by Spruce Woods, to the west by the province of Saskatchewan and to the south by the American state of North Dakota.
