Glasgow University Sports Association
Glasgow University Sports Association (formerly Glasgow University Athletic Club) is a student organisation at the University of Glasgow responsible for the promotion of sport and physical activity around campus. History The Glasgow University Athletic Club was founded on 20 April 1881 and its constitution approved by the Senate ten days later. Its founding aim was to "promote all forms of Athletic Exercise", an aim which continues to this day. In 1903, a women's section was established at Queen Margaret College, the women's section of the University. The Athletic Club provided representation on behalf of all students five years before the foundation of the Students' Representative Council, which now fulfills this role. Along with the Dialectic Society and Medico-Chirurgical Society, the Athletic Club was instrumental in founding the Glasgow University Union in 1885, and the two maintain a close relationship. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Bearsden
Bearsden () is a town in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the northwestern fringe of Greater Glasgow. Approximately from Glasgow City Centre, the town is effectively a suburb, and its housing development coincided with the 1863 introduction of a railway line. The town was named after Bearsden railway station, which was named after a nearby cottage. Bearsden was ranked the seventh-wealthiest area in Britain in a 2005 survey, and has the least social housing of any town in Scotland. The Roman Antonine Wall runs through the town, and the remains of a military bath house can be seen near the town centre. In 1649, the first New Kilpatrick parish church was built, which became the centre of administration for the area. The town's official Gaelic name ''Cille Phàdraig Ùr'' (meaning "new church of Patrick") reflects the name of the parish. Glasgow University Shinty Club
Glasgow University Shinty Club is a shinty club from Glasgow, Scotland. Although formally a University Shinty team, representing the University of Glasgow, it has a long history of competition in national competition. History Founded in 1901, by Angus MacVicar, Murdo Mackenzie and Murdo MacRae, with MacVicar as the first team captain. It entered League competition between 1906 and 1908 and played on the pitch of the Glasgow Skye Shinty Club until 1909, after which it played at the Glasgow Cowal Club pitch at Possilpark, Glasgow. The Club became affiliated to the Glasgow University Sports Association in 1911. Throughout the years the club has also been very strong in University competition, its glory years being in the late 1950s and 1960s, when they won the southern league and the Littlejohn three years in a row. Glasgow University Rugby Football Club
Glasgow University Rugby Football Club is a rugby union club at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. The men's side play in the university league; the women's side play in the . History GURFC was formed in 1869 and is one of the university's oldest student groups, predating the Glasgow University Sports Association (GUSA), to which it is now affiliated. The team plays in black and gold, the colours of the university. The club is a founding member of the Scottish Rugby Union and has fielded thirteen full internationalists, including Jack Tosh. In a remarkably successful 2016/17 season the 1st XV finished 1st in BUCS Scottish 1A as well as winning the BUCS Trophy. The 2nd XV finished 4th in BUCS Scottish 2A as well as reaching the final of the Scottish Conference Cup. The 3rd XV narrowly missed out on promotion coming 2nd in BUCS Scottish 4A. Glasgow University Boat Club (GUBC) is the rowing club of the University of Glasgow, Scotland. The club is affiliated to Scottish Rowing. GUBC is one of the most active and successful clubs within the university, producing rowers and crews that have and continue to compete successfully at local, national and international levels. Club members have frequently been chosen to represent Scotland at both the Home Countries International Regatta and Great Britain at the European Universities Rowing Championships and World Rowing U23 Championships, World Rowing Under-23 Championships.
