Gilmore Artist Award
The Gilmore Artist Award is awarded every four years to a concert pianist. The award was established in 1989 by The Gilmore of Kalamazoo, Michigan. Selection criteria In contrast with other music awards, nominees are not aware that they are under consideration, but are assessed discreetly over a period of time through live performances and recordings. The prize money is $300,000, of which $50,000 to be spent as the winner desires and $250,000 to be used for career development. Kalamazoo, Michigan
Kalamazoo ( ) is a city in the southwest region of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Kalamazoo County. At the 2010 census, Kalamazoo had a population of 74,262. Kalamazoo is the major city of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 335,340 in 2015. Kalamazoo is equidistant from Chicago and Detroit, being about 140 miles (225 kilometers) away from both. One of Kalamazoo's most notable features is the Kalamazoo Mall, an outdoor pedestrian shopping mall. Jonathan Biss
Jonathan Biss (born September 18, 1980) is an American pianist, teacher, and writer based in Philadelphia. He is the co-artistic director (with Mitsuko Uchida) of the Marlboro Music Festival. Early life and education Biss was born into a family of musicians in Bloomington, Indiana. His paternal step-grandmother was one of the first well-known female cellists, the Russian cellist Raya Garbousova, for whom Samuel Barber wrote his cello concerto. His parents, Miriam Fried and Paul Biss, are both violinists. His older brother Daniel, is a politician serving as the mayor of Evanston, Illinois. After studying at Indiana University, where both of his parents taught, Biss entered the Curtis Institute of Music at the age of 17 to study with Leon Fleisher. Maxim Lando
Maxim Lando (born October 5, 2002, in Manhasset, NY) is an American pianist. Lando grew up in Great Neck on Long Island, New York. His parents, a clarinetist and a pianist, ran the local music school there. He began playing the piano when he was three years old. At the age of ten, Lando began studying piano with Hung-Kuan Chen, first at a preparatory class at the New England Conservatory in Boston and then at the Juilliard School's Pre-College in New York. Since the age of eleven, he has been sponsored by the Lang Lang Foundation, which has taken him on concert tours to Spain, Germany, Russia, and the United Kingdom. In 2015, he became the first American to win first prize at the International Television Competition "The Nutcracker" for young musicians in Moscow. Micah McLaurin
Micah McLaurin is an American pianist. Biography Born in Charleston, SC, Micah began playing piano at the age of eight, when his grandmother gave his family her old piano. He started lessons with Marsha Gerber, and later continued studying in Charleston with Enrique Graf. At 18, he was accepted into the Curtis Institute of Music, where he received his bachelor's degree in 2018, studying with Robert McDonald and Gary Graffman. He then completed his master's degree at the Juilliard School with Jerome Lowenthal and Yoheved Kaplinksy. He was a winner of the 2016 Gilmore Young Artist Award, an award given every two years to the two most promising pianists in the country, age 22 and younger. Daniel Hsu
Daniel Hsu (born June 27, 1997) is an American classical pianist. He won the bronze medal, the Beverley Taylor Smith Award for the Best Performance of a New Work, and the Steven De Groote Memorial Award for the Best Performance of Chamber Music at the Fifteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Early life Born in Fremont, California, Hsu began studying piano at 6 with Larisa Kagan. By age 8, he was the youngest winner of the San Francisco Chopin Competition and had made his concerto debut with the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. Conrad Yiwen Tao (born June 11, 1994) is an American composer and pianist and former violinist. Tao's piano and violin performances since childhood brought him early recognition at music festivals and competitions. At age 13, he was featured on the PBS TV series ''From the Top – Live from Carnegie Hall'' as violinist, pianist and composer. He won eight consecutive ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards. George Li
George Li (; born August 24, 1995) is an American concert pianist who was a recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2016 and silver medalist of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky Competition.
