Gilgit Airport
Gilgit Airport is a small domestic airport situated 1.25 nm (2.3 km) east of Gilgit, AIP PakistanOPGT – Gilgit a city in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. The city of Gilgit is one of the two major hubs for mountaineering expeditions in the northern areas of Pakistan. Structure Because of its short runway located at the edge of a slope, even Boeing 737s and similar-sized jet aircraft cannot operate at Gilgit Airport. Pakistan International Airlines operates ATR 42 aircraft on the Gilgit-Islamabad route. In the past, Fokker F-27 Friendships were used. Other aircraft that operate at the airport include the military Lockheed C-130 Hercules. A new terminal was constructed in 2014 and inaugurated by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The airport was planned to be twice as extensive, but waterlogged ground led to half the land being instead used for a public park, CAA Park or City Park Gilgit. Gilgit (; Shina: ; ur, ) is the capital city of Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. The city is located in a broad valley near the confluence of the Gilgit River and the Hunza River. Chilas Airfield
Chilas Airfield is an airfield located at Chilas, a town in Gilgit–Baltistan, Pakistan. History It was built during the British Raj in 1927. After independence, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) further developed it to support the construction of Karakoram Highway. The airfield was also used by Pakistan Air Force in 1960s and 1970s and flew C-130 planes from there. Skardu International Airport
Skardu International Airport is an international civil airport in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. It also serves as a forward operating base of the Pakistan Air Force. On 2 December 2021, Skardu Airport was designated and re-inaugurated as an international airport after providing upgrades to the airport to become a tourism hub for Gilgit-Baltistan. Skardu, along with Gilgit, is a major tourism, trekking, and mountain expedition hub in Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Pakistan. Pakistan International Airlines Flight 404
Pakistan International Airlines Flight 404 was a Fokker F27 Friendship that disappeared shortly after takeoff on 25 August 1989. The aircraft presumably crashed somewhere in the Himalaya Mountains, Pakistan. All 54 people on board were lost and presumed dead. Disappearance At 07:36, a domestic scheduled passenger flight of Pakistan International Airlines took off from the northern city of Gilgit, Pakistan on its way to the national capital Islamabad. One of the pilots of the aircraft made a routine radio call at 07:40; this was the last communication with the aircraft. The aircraft is thought to have crashed in the Himalayas, but the wreckage has never been found. Islamabad International Airport () is the international airport serving Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan. It is located south-west of the city, and is accessed via Srinagar Highway. The airport commenced full operations in 6 May 2018, replacing the defunct Benazir Bhutto International Airport which now forms part of the PAF Base Nur Khan.
