''Ghetto Supastar'' is the debut solo studio album by former Fugees member and American rapper Pras. The album was released on October 27, 1998, through Ruffhouse Records and Columbia Records. Background The album was released by Ruffhouse Records. The album debuted at number fifty-five on the US ''Billboard'' 200 chart, and number thirty-five on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. ''Vibe'' is an American music and entertainment magazine founded by producers David Salzman and Quincy Jones. The publication predominantly features R&B and hip hop music artists, actors and other entertainers. The Product G&B is an American R&B duo made up of David McRae (also known as Sincere Gubano) and Marvin Moore-Hough (also known as Money Harm). They were associated with Wyclef Jean's The Refugee Camp. Since their debut in 1998, the duo lent their vocals to several tracks on Pras' '' Ghetto Supastar'' album, including the single "Blue Angels". Wyclef Jean convinced Arista Records chief Clive Davis to release "Maria Maria", the duo's collaboration with Carlos Santana, as a single, which contributed to Santana's ''Supernatural'' album eventually selling over 30 million copies worldwide. The song became a worldwide number-one hit. "Maria Maria" was named the third most successful song of the year on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. The song also won a Grammy Award in 2000. "What'cha Wanna Do" is a hip hop song by Pras Michel, released as the fourth single from his debut solo studio album, ''Ghetto Supastar''. The track features vocals from American group The Product G&B and rapper Free. The single was due to be released on September 28, 1998, but was pulled, and a last minute replacement, ''Blue Angels'', was released instead. The single was later released in the United States in January 1999, and a music video was filmed. The single was scheduled for release in the United Kingdom in February 1999, but was once again pulled. Some copies of the single found their way onto the shelves. The music video (directed by William Heins) features Michel performing the song in a club, surrounded by people. It also shows him visiting a camp on Hawaii beach, and performing in between a group of girls, surrounded by palm trees. The Product G&B make an appearance in the video. 41st Grammy Awards
The 41st Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 24, 1999, at Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles. They recognized accomplishments by musicians from the year 1998. Lauryn Hill received the most nominations with 10, setting a record for the most nominations for female artist in one night. Hill received a total of 5 awards, and became the first female rapper to take home Best New Artist. Her album ''The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'' became the first hip hop album to win the award for Album of the Year. Songwriters James Horner and Will Jennings won Song of the Year for Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On". Dion herself took home Record of the Year for the latter song. Ol' Dirty Bastard
Russell Tyrone Jones (November 15, 1968 – November 13, 2004), better known by his stage name Ol' Dirty Bastard (often abbreviated as ODB), was an American rapper. He was one of the founding members of the Wu-Tang Clan, a rap group primarily from Staten Island, New York City, which rose to mainstream prominence with its 1993 debut album ''Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)''. His professional success was hampered by frequent legal troubles, including incarceration. He died on November 13, 2004, of an accidental drug overdose, two days before his 36th birthday. Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums is a music chart published weekly by '' Billboard'' magazine that ranks R&B and hip hop albums based on sales in the United States and is compiled by Nielsen SoundScan.
