George Buchan Simpson
George B. Simpson (10 October 1820 – 1 July 1892) was a Scottish art collector, connoisseur and patron of Scottish painters. He financed his interests through his wealth acquired as a linen manufacturer and jute merchant in Dundee. He is "Dundee’s Forgotten Maecenas" according to a recent academic paper. Life George Buchan Simpson was born in Dundee on 10 October 1820. His father was Robert Simpson, a shipmaster and later a flax merchant, and his mother was Janet Buchan. He was educated at Mr. Gilbert’s School in Meadow Entry, Dundee. He married Margaret Maria Shaw on 10 June 1856 at Fettercairn in Kincardineshire. They had two sons and four daughters - Robert John, Jessie, Catherine, Florence, Eleanor and Kenneth. He died in Edinburgh on 1 July 1892. George Paul Chalmers
George Paul Chalmers (1833 – 20 February 1878) was a Scottish landscape, marine, interior and portrait painter. Life Chalmers was born at Montrose, the son of a captain of a coastal vessel, and at the age of twenty he started to study at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder. He was nicknamed ''The Angus Rembrandt''. He started painting portraits including those of many artists such as Jozef Israëls (1824–1911) "the most respected Dutch artist of the second half of the nineteenth century", which was painted together with Hugh Cameron, the portrait painters William McTaggart (1835–1911) and John Pettie (1839–1893) the paintings of the later two artists are in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. He also painted the interiors of houses and cottages like the Cranbrook Colony painters and some Dutch painters but he turned to landscapes and seascapes later in his career. Angus ( sco, Angus; gd, Aonghas) is one of the 32 local government council areas of Scotland, a registration county and a lieutenancy area. Edward Pinnington
Edward Pinnington (1846–1921) was a Scottish art historian, biographer and journalist. He is mainly known for his authoritative biographies of Scottish artists but he also wrote several articles on Robert Burns and his family. Life According to census records, Edward Pinnington was born in Blairgowrie, Perthshire in 1846, though no birth records are available to confirm this. His father was John Hardman Pinnington, an Excise Officer, and his mother, Ann Fishwick. The family seems to originate from Lancashire, England and they lived in various parts of Scotland, namely, the 1841 census: Rose Street, Dundee; and the 1851 census: Logie in Clackmannanshire. The family eventually settled in the Rowans, Cupar Road, Auchtermuchty. Pinnington married Margaret Forbes (1861–1936) on 21 October 1885 in Edinburgh.
