Gennady Kovalev
Gennady Gennadiyevich Kovalev (russian: Геннадий Геннадиевич Ковалёв; born 17 May 1983 in Kropotkin, Krasnodar Krai) is a boxer from Russia. Career Southpaw Kovalev won the silver medal at the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships defeating Bahodirjon Sooltonov but losing to Aghasi Mammadov at bantam, and a gold medal at the 2004 European Amateur Boxing Championships . He participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native country. There he was beaten in the quarterfinals of the Bantamweight (54 kg) division by Cuba's eventual winner Guillermo Rigondeaux. Now at junior welterweight he won the Russian Championships 2007 against legend Alexander Maletin 37:21. At the World championships he beat Bradley Saunders to reach the finals but lost to defending Kazakh champion Serik Sapiyev 5:20. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Alexandr Ivanovich Maletin (russian: Александр Иванович Малетин; born February 6, 1975) is a boxer from Russia best known to win the lightweight world championships 1997. Career Maletin won the bronze medal in the lightweight division (– 57 kg) at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. He beat Makhach Nuridinov (Azerbaijan) 14–5, Patrick Lopez (Venezuela) RSC 3 and Selim Palyani (Turkey) RSC 4. Boxing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Light Welterweight
The light welterweight amateur boxing competition was the median weight class at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The competition was held at the Workers Indoor Arena. Light welterweights were limited to a maximum of 64 kilograms in body mass. Like all Olympic boxing events, the competition was a straight single-elimination tournament. Both semifinal losers were awarded bronze medals, so no boxers competed again after their first loss. Bouts consisted of four rounds of two minutes each, with one-minute breaks between rounds. Punches scored only if the white area on the front of the glove made full contact with the front of the head or torso of the opponent. Five judges scored each bout; three of the judges had to signal a scoring punch within one second for the punch to score. The winner of the bout was the boxer who scored the most valid punches by the end of the bout. Malik Bouziane ( ar, مالك بوزيان) (born January 11, 1978) is an Algerian former professional boxer. As an amateur, he competed at the 2004 Summer Olympics. Career Bouziane participated in the 2004 Summer Olympics for his native North African country. There, he was stopped in the second round of the bantamweight (54 kg) division by Russia's Gennady Kovalev. Bouziane won the gold medal in the same division one year earlier, at the All-Africa Games in Abuja, Nigeria. Boris Georgiev ( bg, Борис Георгиев) (born 5 December 1982) is an amateur boxer from Bulgaria who won a bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the light welterweight class.
