Gate is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Thurston County, Washington, Thurston County, Washington (state), Washington, United States. Gate is located on the Black River (Chehalis River tributary), Black River, west-northwest of Rochester, Washington, Rochester. History The community was established in 1881 and platted in 1890. The Northern Pacific Railway built a junction in Gate, and the town developed a lumber industry. The community was named Gate due to the railroad junction, which made it the "gateway to the coast". Much of the town was devastated by fires in the early 1900s, and the decline of the area's lumber mills further hurt Gate's economy. The Gate School is the historic former school in Gate, Washington. The one room schoolhouse was built in 1910. The frame building features a gable roof, eaves with decorative brackets, exposed rafter tails, a brick chimney, and a square bell tower. Capitol State Forest
The Capitol State Forest is a state forest in Thurston and Grays Harbor counties of the U.S. state of Washington. It includes part of the unusual Mima Mounds geologic feature. The National Natural Landmarks (NNL) Program recognizes and encourages the conservation of outstanding examples of the natural history of the United States. Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve is a state-protected Natural Area in southwest Washington state, United States. The preserve includes some of the Washington mima mounds, the origin of which still is not fully understood. The site comprises of Garry oak woodland, oak savanna, and prairie grasslands. Several state and federal endangered species of butterfly depending on the unique prairie conditions can be found in the preserve, including Mardon skipper, zerene fritillary, Puget blue and Taylor's checkerspot.
