Gareth Evans (filmmaker)
Gareth Huw Evans (born April 1980) is a Welsh film director, screenwriter, editor, and action choreographer. He is best known for the Indonesian action crime films '' Merantau'' (2009), '' The Raid'' (2011), and '' The Raid 2'' (2014), and for bringing the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat into world cinema through these films. He is also known for creating the action crime drama television series '' Gangs of London'' (2020). Early life Evans was born and raised in Hirwaun, Cynon Valley. He graduated from the University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales) with an MA in screenwriting. Career After directing a small-budget film called ''Footsteps'', Evans was hired as a freelance director for a documentary about the Indonesian martial art pencak silat. He became fascinated with it, and discovered Indonesian martial artist Iko Uwais, who was working as a deliveryman for a phone company. Evans cast Uwais in his 2009 film '' Merantau''. Hirwaun
Hirwaun is a village and community at the north end of the Cynon Valley in the County Borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales. It is NW of the town of Aberdare, and comes under the Aberdare post town. At the 2001 census, Hirwaun had a population of 4,851. increasing at the 2011 census to 4,990. The village is on the Heads of the Valleys Road and at the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Etymology Hirwaun (also formerly spelled as Hirwain and Herwain) derives from two common Welsh toponyms "Hir" meaning long and "Gwaun" meaning moorland. Writing in 1887, Rev. Thomas Morgan stated that the correct name is ''Hirwaun Gwrgant'', meaning Gwrgan's "Waun". This name comes from its association with Gwrgan ab Ithel (1033 - 1070), a king of Morgannwg who is said to have freely given a portion of the waun (named "Y Waun Hir") to his poor subjects and all other Welshmen for raising corn, and the breeding of sheep and cattle. Timo Tjahjanto (; born Timothy Tjahjanto; 4 September 1980) is an Indonesian film director, producer, and screenwriter known for his works on the horror and action genres. Tjahjanto runs the film production company Merah Production. Apart from directing, producing, and writing his own films, Tjahjanto is also known as one half of The Mo Brothers with friend and fellow filmmaker Kimo Stamboel.
