Gabriel Pareyon
Gabriel Pareyon (born October 23, 1974, Zapopan, Jalisco) is a polymathic Mexican composer and musicologist, who has published literature on topics of philosophy and semiotics. He has a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Helsinki, where he studied with Solomon Marcus and Eero Tarasti (2006–2011). He received bachelor's and master's degrees in composition at the Royal Conservatoire, The Hague (2000–2004), where he studied with Clarence Barlow. He previously studied at the Composers’ Workshop of the National Conservatoire of Music, Mexico City (1995–1998), led by Mario Lavista. Composer Pareyon's output is specially known by '' Xochicuicatl cuecuechtli'' (2011), the first modern opera in the Americas that exclusively uses a Native American language ( Nahuatl in this case) as well as music instruments native to Mexico. Clarence Barlow
Clarence Barlow (also Klarenz, born 27 December 1945) is a composer of classical and electroacoustic works. Career Barlow was one of the founders of Initiative Musik und Informatik Köln. In 1988 he was the director of music at the International Computer Music Conference in Cologne. From 1990 to 1994, Barlow was the artistic director of the Institute of Sonology, at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where he also taught in the composition department. Barlow was the Corwin Endowed Chair and head of composition at University of California, Santa Barbara’s Music Department from 2006 to 2019. Wairoa Māori Film Festival
The Wairoa Māori Film Festival is New Zealand's premiere Māori and indigenous film festival. The festival is held annually in the small coastal town of Nūhaka, Hawke's Bay, during the Matariki celebration period. The festival first occurred in 2005 and is now an annual event. In 2008, the festival travelled to other centres in New Zealand, including Auckland and Wellington, and now travels each year, including to international locations. Xochicuicatl Cuecuechtli
''Xochicuicatl cuecuechtli'' (''Ribald Flowersong'') is the first contemporary opera exclusively developed in Nahuatl language and accompanied by an orchestra of Native Mexican instruments. It was written between June, 2011 and January, 2013 by Mexican composer Gabriel Pareyon, after more than a decade of literary, musical and linguistic research. Its text and poetical contents directly come from the homonymous poem, compiled by friar Bernardino de Sahagun amidst the 16th century, among Nahua informants that survived the Conquest of the Aztec Empire.
