Dafydd Ap Gwilym
Dafydd ap Gwilym ( 1315/1320 – 1350/1370) is regarded as one of the leading Welsh poets and amongst the great poets of Europe in the Middle Ages. Life R. Geraint Gruffydd suggests 1315- 1350 as the poet's dates; others place him a little later from 1320- 1370. Later tradition has it that Dafydd was born at Brogynin, Penrhyn-coch (at the time Llanbadarn Fawr parish), Ceredigion. His father, Gwilym Gam, and mother, Ardudfyl, were both from noble families. As one of noble birth it seems Dafydd did not belong to the guild of professional poets in medieval Wales, and yet the poetic tradition had been strong in his family for generations. According to R. Geraint Gruffydd he died in 1350, a possible victim of the Black Death. Tradition says that he was buried within the precinct of the Cistercian Strata Florida Abbey, Ceredigion. Lisa Gwilym
Lisa Gwilym (born 17 June 1975) is a Welsh broadcaster. She is best known as a presenter for BBC Radio Cymru and the Welsh language television channel, S4C. Television Gwilym began her career at S4C in 1998 as a continuity presenter for the ''Planed Plant'' children's strand. In October 2001, she joined the S4C live teen magazine programme ''Uned 5'' (Unit 5) as a presenter. During her time on the show, she took part in the 2003 John Cooper Mini Challenge. She also co-presented a special documentary with then-colleague Gethin Jones from Madagascar. Gwilym quit as presenter in December 2004, but stayed with the programme as a producer until 2006. Gwilym Lee
Gwilym Lee (born 24 November 1983) is a Welsh actor. He is best known for his roles in '' Jamestown'', ''Midsomer Murders'', '' Top End Wedding'', ''The Great'', and for playing guitarist Brian May in the Queen biopic ''Bohemian Rhapsody''. Early life Lee was born in Bristol to Welsh parents, Tom and Ceinwen. He has three older siblings: Geraint, Owen and Rhiannon. Lowri Gwilym (born Lowri Williams; 14 October 1954 – 21 July 2010) was a Welsh television and radio producer. She worked for BBC Wales and the Welsh-language channel S4C. Early life Gwilym was born Lowri Williams on 14 October 1954 in Aberystwyth. Her parents were Daisy and David Gwyn Williams, a writer and academic. She grew up in Turkey and Libya, where her father was an English professor. When she was 18, she changed her surname from Williams to the Welsh form, Gwilym. She studied the Welsh language at Bangor University and completed a Master of Letters at the University of Oxford. She then lectured at the University of Bologna for two years. Eurfyl ap Gwilym (born 14 November 1944) is a Welsh economist, deputy chairman of the Principality Building Society, and a Plaid Cymru politician. He was born in Penparcau, Ceredigion and was educated at Ardwyn Grammar School followed by a BSc and PhD at King's College London. Professional career Ap Gwilym is a Deputy Chairman of the Principality Building Society, which is the largest mutual society in Wales. Gwilym Lloyd George, 1st Viscount Tenby, (4 December 1894 – 14 February 1967) was a Welsh politician and cabinet minister. The younger son of David Lloyd George, he served as Home Secretary from 1954 to 1957. Gwilym Taf Kessey (13 January 1919 – 25 June 1986) was an Australian cricketer who played thirteen first-class matches between 1945 and 1950 for Western Australian sides as a wicket-keeper. He made his debut for Western Australia in 1945 against the Australian Services cricket team, making 22 * in his only innings. William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog)
William Rees (8 November 1802 – 8 November 1883), usually known in Wales by his bardic name of Gwilym Hiraethog, was a Welsh poet and author, one of the major figures of Welsh literature during the 19th century. Gwilym Hiraethog took his pseudonym from his birthplace, a farm on the Hiraethog mountain in Denbighshire. Largely self-educated, he was a polymath, who took an interest in astronomy and political science as well as being a Nonconformist minister and a leading literary figure. In 1843, he founded the Welsh language journal ''Yr Amserau ("The Times")'' in Liverpool. He used the newspaper to campaign for the disestablishment of the Church in Wales. Rees also penned the hymn text of ''Dyma gariad fel y moroedd'' (''Here is love, vast as the ocean''), which was first published in 1847 but strongly associated with the 1904-1905 Welsh revival. Gwilym Prys Davies, Baron Prys-Davies (8 December 1923 – 28 March 2017) was a Welsh Labour politician. He was a pioneer of the use of the Welsh language for official purposes, and in 1982 became the first member of the House of Lords to take the oath of allegiance in Welsh. Biography Gwilym Prys Davies was born in the village of Llanegryn, in Meirionnydd, Wales. He served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, on North Atlantic Convoys. After the war was over, he went to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth to study law. This is where he met Llinos Evans, to whom he would be married for over fifty years until her death in 2010. Gwilym Simcock (born 24 February 1981) is a Welsh pianist and composer working in both jazz and classical music, often blurring any distinction between the two musical forms.
