National Guard (El Salvador)
The National Guard () was the national gendarmerie of El Salvador. The National Guard of El Salvador was founded in 1912 by President Dr. Manuel Enrique Araujo as a branch of the Salvadoran Army for policing rural areas. The National Guard was reorganized into a separate civilian force based on the Spanish Civil Guard, and served with distinction during the Football War. The National Guard developed a reputation for police brutality and human rights abuses in El Salvador, and was disbanded on 16 January 1992 as part of the Chapultepec Peace Accords to end the Salvadoran Civil War. Guardia Republicana is a Peruvian football club, playing in the city of Lima. The club was founded 1981 and plays in the Copa Perú, which is the third division of the Peruvian league. History The club was 1985, 1987, and 1995 Segunda División Peruana champion. The club has played at the highest level of Peruvian football on three occasions, from 1986 Torneo Descentralizado until 1988 Torneo Descentralizado, when it was relegated. The team returned to the Peruvian First Division in 1996 (Torneo Descentralizado), but was relegated at the end of the same year. To this day it has not returned to professional football. In Mexico, the term ''Rurales'' (Spanish) is used to refer to two armed government forces. The historic Guardia Rural ('Rural Guard') was a rural mounted police force, founded by President Benito Juárez in 1861 and expanded by President Porfirio Díaz (r. 1876–1911). Under Díaz, it served as an effective force of repression and a counterweight to the Mexican Army during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The ''rurales'' were dissolved during the Mexican Revolution. The modern Cuerpo de Defensa Rural ('Rural Defense Corps') is a modern part-time voluntary militia, generally used to support Federal forces. The Noble Guard () was one of the household guard units serving the Pope, and formed part of the military in Vatican City. It was formed by Pope Pius VII in 1801 as a regiment of heavy cavalry, and abolished in 1970 by Pope Paul VI following Vatican II. Conceived as the Pope's personal guard, the unit provided a mounted escort for the Pope when he moved about Rome in his carriage and mounted guard outside his apartments in the papal palaces. The guardsmen were also available for special missions within the Papal States at the behest of the pope. One of their first major duties was to escort Pius VII to Paris for the coronation of Napoleon in 1804. The Republican Guard of Peru () was a branch of the Peruvian National Gendarmerie responsible for providing security to the headquarters of public institutions and penitentiary establishments, as well as border control. The Italian National Republican Guard ( Italian: ''Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana'', or GNR) was a gendarmerie force of the Italian Social Republic created by decree on 8 December 1943, replacing the Carabinieri and the National Security Volunteer Militia (MVSN).
