Grand Lake-Gagetown
Grand Lake-Gagetown was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. It was first created in the 2006 redrawing of electoral districts and was first used in the general election later that year. Its last MLA was Ross Wetmore. History It was created in 2006 from parts of Grand Lake and Oromocto-Gagetown. From Grand Lake, it took Chipman, Minto and other communities around the Grand Lake area, however large portions of the district—both in terms of geographics with large forested areas in the west of the district and in terms of population with suburban areas just outside of Fredericton—were lost to the district of Fredericton-Fort Nashwaak. From Oromocto-Gagetown it took all portions of the district north of the Saint John River, including the Village of Gagetown. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 2006
The 2006 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was undertaken as a result of legislation introduced by Bernard Lord, the Premier of New Brunswick, Canada, on June 9, 2005. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistricting, redistribution of electoral district (Canada), electoral districts after every decennial Statistics Canada, Canadian census. The redistribution process set out in the legislation took approximately six months to complete, and was overseen by an independent commission. The bill introduced by the government would have required that 55 Riding (division), ridings be maintained with populations varying between 75% and 110% of 1/55 of the provincial population. Eugene McGuinley
Eugene Gregory Bernard McGinley (July 31, 1935 – July 16, 2019) was a politician in the province of New Brunswick, Canada. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in a 1972 by-election to represent the electoral district of Bathurst and was re-elected in 1974 following which he retired from politics. He was re-elected in 2003 to represent the district of Grand Lake. On February 6, 2007 he was elected speaker of the legislature defeating Tony Huntjens and Wally Stiles on the first ballot. He resigned the speakership on October 31, 2007 to accept an appointment to the cabinet as Minister of State for Seniors and Housing. He was left out of cabinet following a November 2008 cabinet shuffle. McGinley did not reoffer in the 2010 election. McGinley was educated at the University of New Brunswick and in Texas. Kris Austin
Kris Austin (born 1979) is a Canadian politician who serves as an MLA in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick. Previously, he served as the leader of the People's Alliance of New Brunswick. On October 13, 2022, he was appointed minister of public safety and solicitor-general by Premier Blaine Higgs and served in that position until the Higgs government was defeated in the 2024 New Brunswick general election. Austin led the People's Alliance into the 2010 provincial election and 2014 provincial elections in which the party won no seats. In the 2018 provincial election the party won three seats including Austin's riding of Fredericton-Grand Lake. He was re-elected in the 2020 provincial election in which his party lost one seat, electing two MLAs. On March 30, 2022, Austin announced he will be leaving the People's Alliance of New Brunswick to join the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick. Gagetown, New Brunswick
Gagetown is a former village in Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada. It held village status prior to 2023 and is now part of the village of Arcadia. It is on the west bank of the Saint John River and is the county's shire town. History Gagetown was originally named Grimross by the Acadians and Maliseet, who lived there prior to the Expulsion of the Acadians. The Raid on Grimross occurred during the St. John River Campaign (1758–59). During the Expulsion of the Acadians, many Acadians fled from various parts of the Maritimes to villages along the Saint John River. The St. John River Campaign occurred during the French and Indian War when Colonel Robert Monckton led a force of 1,150 British soldiers to destroy the Acadian settlements on the banks of the Saint John River until they reached the largest village of Ste Anne's Point (present day Fredericton, New Brunswick) in February 1759. Grand Lake (New Brunswick)
Grand Lake is a lake located in central New Brunswick, Canada. It is approximately 40 kilometers east of Fredericton; and the province's largest open body of water approximately 33 kilometers long and 8 kilometers wide. The lake drains through the Jemseg River and the Grand Lake Meadows into the Saint John River. Records indicate that by the early 1600s rand Lakewas inhabited by Maliseet and Mi’kmaq peoples. The traditional word for Grand Lake is "Kchee'quis" meaning Big Lake. Commercial barges of forest products were towed across the lake from a large sawmill in Chipman to a pulp mill in Saint John until the late 1990s. Other commercial activities included New Brunswick's largest coal mining area with extensive strip mines in the Newcastle Creek valley. Oromocto-Gagetown
Oromocto was a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The district was created in 1973 from the old multi-member district of Sunbury, taking in the Town of Oromocto, CFB Gagetown and immediate surrounding areas. In 1994 its boundaries were considerably expanded, taking in larger parts of Sunbury County and parts of Queens County and it was renamed Oromocto-Gagetown (in recognition of the Village of Gagetown, not the Canadian Forces Base known as CFB Gagetown).
