Graham Alan Jones (born 28 December 1947) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Biography Jones, born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, began his British leagues career riding for Boston Barracudas during the 1971 British League Division Two season. The following season in 1972, he initially was loaned to Berwick Bandits before signing for them and would remain with the Northumberland club for the rest of his career. He would become a fan's favourite and by the time he retired would also be regarded as a club legend. Jones started with a season average of 4.26 in 1972 and improved to a high of 8.79 during the 1978 season. Boston Barracudas
The Boston Barracudas were a Motorcycle speedway, speedway team that competed from 1970 to 1987 and again from 2000 to 2008. the team were based at Boston Sports Stadium in New Hammond Beck Road, Boston, Lincolnshire. History Origins and 1970s The Boston Barracudas were founded mid-season in 1970 by promoters Cyril Crane and Gordon Perkins. Planning permission was received to construct a track at the Boston Sports Stadium and the promoters bought the second tier team known as the King's Lynn Starlets from Maurice Littlechild. The Barracudas first home fixture was an inter-counties cup match against Peterborough Panthers on 16 August. The team fulfilled the remaining King's Lynn fixtures and finished the season in 13th place. Berwick Bandits
The Berwick Bandits are a British speedway club, based in Berwick-upon-Tweed. They currently compete in the SGB Championship, racing at Shielfield Park, with home matches usually taking place on Saturday evenings. They also run a second team in the National Development League, known as the Berwick Bullets. History 1960s The start of speedway in Berwick began in late 1967, when speedway promoter Danny Taylor left the Glasgow Tigers after just one season due to travel problems from Glasgow to his chicken farm business in Jedburgh. He announced that he was in negotiation with Berwick Rangers to use Shielfield Park. Berwick's debut season coincided with the inaugural British League Division Two season in 1968. Knockout Cup (sometimes referred to as the KO Cup) is a type of British motorcycle speedway competition, examples of which have run annually since 1929. Each tier of British Speedway has its own respective Knockout Cup. The current Knockout Cup competitions are the SGB Premiership Knockout Cup (tier one), the SGB Championship Knockout Cup (tier two) and the National League Knockout Cup (tier three). The cups were run in the past under the associated name of the League at the time. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . 1971 British League Division Two Season
The 1971 British League Division Two season was the second tier/division motorcycle speedway in Great Britain. Summary The league continued with 17 teams in its fourth season despite Reading Racers moving up to Division One and two teams dropping out because there were three new entrants to the league. Doncaster Dragons disbanded for good, with the promotion and some of the riders moving to Birmingham and re-forming the Birmingham Brummies, who had last raced in 1957. The Crayford Highwayman also dropped out and the Middlesbrough Teessiders changed their name to Teesside Teessiders. Birmingham were one of the new entrants along with Sunderland Stars (who last raced in 1964 as the Saints). Hull Vikings were the final new entrant when Ian Thomas brought speedway back to Hull, to race at the Boulevard Stadium. British League Division Two Knockout Cup
The British League Division Two Knockout Cup (known as the National League Knockout Cup between 1976 and 1990 in line with the name of the league) was a motorcycle speedway Knockout Cup competition in the United Kingdom governed by the Speedway Control Bureau (SCB), in conjunction with the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA). The teams from the second and lowest tier of league racing, the British League Division Two, took part. Similar competitions have been held within the leagues that succeeded the British League. Competition format The competition was run on a knockout principle; teams drawn together race home and away matches against each other, with the aggregate score deciding the result. 1980 National League Season
The 1980 National League was contested as the second division of Speedway in the United Kingdom. Summary The league was increased from 19 teams to 20 from the previous season. Exeter Falcons dropped down from the British League to join the 19 incumbent sides. Rye House Rockets who had been pipped to the title in the previous season in the last meeting, won the title by just one point from Newcastle Diamonds to win their first National League title. Rye House had managed to retain all of their top riders from the previous season and the solid performances of Bob Garrad, Karl Fiala, Kelvin Mullarkey and Kevin Smith for the second year running made up for the disappointment of 1979.
