The Government Navy (''Gouvernementsmarine'' in Dutch or GM) was a Dutch naval force which stemmed from the Colonial Navy in the former Dutch East Indies. It existed from 1861 to 1949 and operated in a civil-administrative role alongside the Royal Netherlands Navy. It was primarily focused on tasks such as policing and transport. The Ministry of Colonies was a Dutch ministry that arranged all matters relating to the Dutch colonies. History After the dissolution of the West India Company, a Council of the American Colonies and Possessions was established, which in 1806 was rescinded under King Louis Napoleon Bonaparte. Instead, the Ministry of Commerce and Colonies was established on 29 July 1806, headed by Paulus van der Heim. This ministry was transformed on 8 July 1808 into the Ministry of Marine and Colonies, again under Van der Heim. During the incorporation of the Netherlands at the First French Empire on 13 July 1810, the ministry continued as a separate division (Division Hollandaise) under the French Ministère de la Marine et des Colonies in Paris. Operation Trikora was an Indonesian military operation which aimed to seize and annex the Dutch overseas territory of Netherlands New Guinea in 1961 and 1962. Battle Of Arafura Sea
The Battle of Arafura Sea ( id, Pertempuran Laut Aru), also known as the Battle of Vlakke Hoek ( nl, Slag bij Vlakke Hoek), was a naval battle in the Vlakke Hoek Bay (Etna Bay) of the Arafura Sea in Western New Guinea on January 15, 1962, between Indonesia and the Netherlands. The battle stopped an attempt by the Indonesian Navy to land 150 soldiers in Kaimana in Dutch New Guinea for sabotage and to incite the local population against the Dutch government. Commodore Yos Sudarso was in charge of the operation at sea, while Colonel Murshid commanded the infiltrators. A naval ensign is an ensign (maritime flag) used by naval ships of various countries to denote their nationality. It can be the same or different from a country's civil ensign or state ensign. It can also be known as a war ensign. A large version of a naval ensign that is flown on a warship's mast just before going into battle is called a battle ensign. The naval history of the Netherlands dates back to the 15th century. As overseas trade was a traditional cornerstone of the Dutch economy, naval defence was indispensable for the protection of commercial interests. Origins At first the Dutch navy had a private character. Wealthy merchants and local authorities in the many ports of the Low Countries took initiative to arm ships since the 15th century and incidentally attacked pirates and foreign competitors. Defensive measures to protect the merchant ships could include sailing in a convoy and arming the merchants themselves. Offensive actions could include taking enemy ships by force.
