Gottfried Christoph Beireis
Gottfried Christoph Beireis (2 March 1730 – 18 September 1809) was a German chemist and doctor. He was also a collector of curiosities who rescued some of Jacques de Vaucanson's automata. Biography Beireis was born in Mühlhausen. He taught anatomy, medicine, surgery, chemistry, botany, natural history, pharmacy, mineralogy, metallurgy, agriculture, forestry, music, painting, and numismatics. As a student, he discovered a way to convert ammonium sulfide to cinnabar and made a fortune selling the latter as a red dye. Beireis was a student of Georg Erhardt Hamberger's in Jena in 1753. Beireis became a professor in 1759 without having obtained his MD degree; the degree was awarded subsequently for work done at Helmstadt under Lorenz Heister between 1756 and 1759. Mühlhausen () is a city in the north-west of Thuringia, Germany, north of Niederdorla, the country's geographical centre, north-west of Erfurt, east of Kassel and south-east of Göttingen. Christian Heinrich Bünger
Christian Heinrich Bünger (11 October 1782 – 8 December 1842) was professor of anatomy and was the first surgeon to introduce rhinoplasty. Education He received his MD in c. 1805 from the University of Helmstedt under Justus Christian Loder, Justus Ferdinand Christian Loder and Gottfried Christoph Beireis. Career Bünger was professor of anatomy at the University of Marburg. He was an expert and innovator in operations on the nerve, lymph, and arteries, arterial systems, especially ligature (medicine), arterial ligations. He was the first to work out the exact natural positions of the ear, auditory apparatus of animals and humans. Bünger was also a specialist in plastic surgery, especially of the nose and eyelids. Jacques de Vaucanson (; February 24, 1709 – November 21, 1782) was a French inventor and artist who built the first all-metal lathe which was very important to the Industrial Revolution. The lathe is known as the mother of machine tools, as it was the first machine tool that led to the invention of other machine tools. He was responsible for the creation of impressive and innovative automata. He also was the first person to design an automatic loom.
