Globitermes Sulphureus
''Globitermes sulphureus'' (suicidal attack ants) is a species of termite that is very common in central and southern Vietnam and also present in other areas of South East Asia, including Cambodia, Thailand, and Peninsular Malaysia. They live in nests made of earth that can be up to 1.5 m tall and can contain tens of thousands of individuals. Between five and 10 per cent of the population are soldier termites which can be recognised by their yellow abdomen and two large, curved mandibles. The termites use autothysis as a defense mechanism. Defense When the nest is damaged, the soldier termites defend the nest and workers rapidly repair any damage to the nest walls. The soldiers stand on alert on their legs and scan the area with their antennae. If the nest is attacked by ants, for example ''Oecophylla smaragdina'', the workers immediately escape by retreating into the nest, while the soldiers remain outside to defend the nest. Autothysis
Autothysis (from the Greek roots ''autos-'' "self" and ''thysia'' "sacrifice") or suicidal altruism is the process where an animal destroys itself via an internal rupturing or explosion of an organ which ruptures the skin. The term was proposed by Ulrich Maschwitz and Eleonore Maschwitz in 1974 to describe the defensive mechanism of ''Colobopsis saundersi'', a species of ant. It is caused by a contraction of muscles around a large gland that leads to the breaking of the gland wall. Some termites (such as the soldiers of ''Globitermes sulphureus'') release a sticky secretion by rupturing a gland near the skin of their neck, producing a tar effect in defense against ants. Amitermitinae
Amitermitinae is a disputed subfamily of "higher termites" now often merged with the subfamily Termitinae and is considered by ITIS as a synonym; it had previously been placed in the family Rhinotermitidae. Amitermitinae have as typical characteristics: a usually rounded head with a bilobed clypeus. The mandibles of their soldiers usually has a single median tooth. They have evolved the ability to have many reproductives in their colony, up to a hundred, which allows very large colonies. As with other members of their family, Termitidae, they have lost most of their cellulose-digesting protozoa. Instead, they eat fungi, which digest cellulose and other organic matter. George Darby Haviland
George Darby Haviland (1857–1901) was a British surgeon and naturalist. He was born at Warbleton, Sussex in England. He served as Director of the Raffles Museum in Singapore as well as being a medical officer in Sarawak and Curator of the Sarawak Museum in Kuching from 1891 to 1893. In 1895 he returned to England and worked at the Kew Herbarium in London before going to South Africa where he died in Natal.
