Global Challenge
The Global Challenge (not to be confused with Global Challenge Award) was around a world yacht race run by Challenge Business, the company started by Sir Chay Blyth in 1989. It was held every four years and took a fleet of one-design steel yachts, crewed by ordinary men and women who had paid to take part, round Cape Horn and through the Southern Ocean where winds can reach . The fee for the last race proposed (in 2008) was £28,750. It was unique in that the race took the westabout route worldwide against prevailing winds and currents, often referred to as the ‘wrong way’ route. The race's route covered a distance of some . Global Challenge Award
The Global Challenge Award is an online science and engineering design program for pre-college school students (e.g. middle school through high school) from all over the world. It is an initiative that started with a partnership with the University of Vermont in collaboration with the National Science Foundation, currently funded by the MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning program as well as other foundations and corporations, wherein students have the opportunity to form teams with international counterparts and work towards a solution to mitigate global warming and help envision the future of renewable energy. The program is an online educational environment that uses game based learning, simulation and Web-based science resources in a global competition. British Steel (yacht)
''British Steel'' is a 59 ft (18 m) ketch famous for a circumnavigation of the globe "the wrong way" (i.e. from east to west, against prevailing winds and currents) by Chay Blyth in 1970/71. Will Oxley
William Oxley (born 1965) is a racing skipper/navigator and marine biologist who has completed more than 300,000 nm of ocean racing including five round the world races and 20 Sydney to Hobart races. From 1992 to 2000 he worked at the Australian Institute of Marine Science as part of the Long-term Monitoring Project which is intended to monitor the condition of the Great Barrier Reef. Conrad David Humphreys (born 13 February 1973) is a British professional yachtsman and motivational speaker. Simon Walker (yachtsman)
Simon Walker is an English yachtsman, adventurer and businessman. He is one of only a handful of people who have raced the wrong way around the world more than once. Walker raced on board Rhone Poulenc as the mate in the British Steel Challenge in 1992–3, and again as Skipper of Toshiba Wave Warrior in the next edition, the BT Global Challenge 1996–7. He finished 2nd overall and was the youngest skipper in the fleet. He won the first Teacher's Highland Cream, Teacher's Whisky Round Britain Challenge race in 1995. The Challenge 67 is a steel-hulled yacht. It is from bow to stern, and this is where it gets its name. There were 14 of these yachts built, for the purpose of racing in the BT Global Challenge. Pete Goss
Pete Goss, MBE (born 22 December 1961) is a British yachtsman who has sailed more than . A former Royal Marine, he is famous for his pioneering project Team Philips. He was invested in the Legion d'Honneur for saving fellow sailor Raphaël Dinelli in the 1996 Vendée Globe solo around the world yacht race. During a severe storm in the Southern Ocean, he turned his boat around and spent two days sailing into hurricane-force winds, finally finding Dinelli in a life-raft that had been dropped by an Australian Air Force plane shortly before the yacht had sunk. Dinelli is said to have come aboard clutching a bottle of champagne. Mike Golding
Mike Golding (born 27 August 1960) is an English yachtsman, born in Great Yarmouth and educated at Reading Blue Coat School. He is one of the few yachtsmen to have raced round the world non-stop in both directions. He held the solo record for sailing round the world westabout (the most challenging direction for circumnavigation) between 1994 and 2000. Golding, who was named president of London's Little Ship Club in 2017 and is a member of Royal Southampton Yacht Club, is the eponymous co-founder of the commercial company Mike Golding Yacht Racing Ltd.
