Glandford Watermill
Glandford watermill is situated on the River Glaven a little north of the village of Glandford within the English county of Norfolk. Glandford is in the civil parish of Wiveton within the district of North Norfolk North Norfolk is a Non-metropolitan district, local government district in Norfolk, England. Description This watermill was built in 1907 but there had been a mill here long before this date. The map produced by Faden's in 1797 records a mill at "Glanford" on the river Glaven. The present mill is constructed with Norfolk red brick and flints that had been taken from a local gravel pit on the eastern side of the Glaven valley above Glandford. River Glaven
The River Glaven in the eastern English county of Norfolk is long and flows through picturesque North Norfolk countryside to the North Sea. Rising from a tiny headwater in Bodham the river starts miles before Selbrigg Pond where three small streams combine. The scenic value of the Glaven valley is important to the tourist industry in North Norfolk. The river is one of over 200 chalk rivers in the world and one of 160 in the UK. Geography The river has a catchment area of approximately 115 km2 and from its source falls 50 metres to the present tidal limit at Cley sluice The sub-surface geology is predominantly chalk and in parts of the lower valley the river runs over chalk beds. The land adjoining the river consists of a mixture of arable farm land and, in the upper reaches near Edgefield, coniferous plantations. Wiveton
Wiveton is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is situated on the west bank of the River Glaven, inland from the coast and directly across the river from the village of Cley next the Sea. The larger village of Blakeney is to the west, the town of Cromer is to the east, and the city of Norwich is to the south-east. The civil parish has an area of and in the 2001 census had a population of 158 in 74 households, the population reducing to 127 at the 2011 census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of North Norfolk. History The villages name origin is uncertain. 'Wife's farm/settlement' or 'women's farm/settlement'.
