Gladys Hulette
Gladys Hulette (July 21, 1896 – August 8, 1991) was an American silent film actress from Arcade, New York, United States. Her career began in the early years of silent movies and continued until the mid-1930s. She first performed on stage at the age of three and on screen when she was seven years old. Hulette was also a talented artist. Her mother was an opera star. Child actress Hulette was among the principal players in ''Sappho and Phaon'' which had its first performance in Providence, Rhode Island on October 4, 1907. She helped support Bertha Kalich in the Percy MacKaye production. As a child she also appeared in ''Romeo and Juliet'' (1908) and ''The Smoke Fairy'' (1909). On Broadway, in '' The Blue Bird'' (1910), she played Tyltyl. She was the sweet youth, Beth, in '' Little Women'' (1912). ''Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'' is a 10-minute black-and-white silent film made in the United States in 1910, and is based on Lewis Carroll's 1865 book of the same name. Made by the Edison Manufacturing Company and directed by Edwin S. Porter, the film starred Gladys Hulette as Alice. Being a silent film, naturally all of Lewis Carroll's nonsensical prose could not be used, and, being only a one-reel picture, most of Carroll's memorable characters in his original 1865 novel similarly could not be included. What was used in the film was faithful in spirit to Carroll, and in design to the original John Tenniel illustrations. ''Variety'' complimented the picture by comparing it favorably to the "foreign" film fantasies then flooding American cinemas. ''Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy'' is a 1909 five-minute silent film directed by J. Stuart Blackton. In the film, a smoker (Paul Panzer) falls asleep and is visited by two fairies (one of which is played by Gladys Hulette). Audiences marveled at the special effects featuring the fairies interacting with objects much larger than themselves. ''Princess Nicotine; or, The Smoke Fairy'' was the first instance of tobacco product placement (for Sweet Corporal cigarettes and cigars) in the movies.
