Girish Luthra
Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, PVSM, AVSM, VSM, ADC is a retired officer of Indian Navy who served as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Western Naval Command from 1 June 2016 to 30 January 2019. He took over the position from Admiral Sunil Lanba who was promoted to Chief of Naval Staff, and was succeeded by Vice Admiral Ajit Kumar. Early life and education Luthra has attended the National Defence Academy, Pune; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington; and Naval War College, Newport. Biography Luthra was commissioned into the executive branch of the Navy in July 1979. He has commanded three warships including, INS ''Khukri'', INS ''Talwar'' and INS ''Viraat''. Vice Admiral (India)
Vice admiral is a three-star flag officer rank in the Indian Navy. It is the second-highest active rank in the Indian Navy. Western Fleet (India)
The Western Fleet is a Naval fleet of the Indian Navy. It is known as the 'Sword Arm' of the Indian Navy. It is headquartered at Mumbai, Maharashtra on the west coast of India. INS Viraat
INS ''Viraat'' (Sanskrit: Virāṭa meaning ''Giant'') was a of the Indian Navy. INS ''Viraat'' was the flagship of the Indian Navy before was commissioned in 2013. The ship was completed and commissioned in 1959 as the Royal Navy's , and decommissioned in 1984. It was sold to India in 1987. INS ''Viraat'' was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 12 May 1987, and served for almost 30 years. In February 2015, the Navy stated that ''Viraat'' would be decommissioned the following year. INS ''Gomati'' (F21) was a guided-missile frigate of Indian Navy. Career The ship was built by Mazagon Dock Ltd in Mumbai and has an indigenous content of 72%. After her mid-life upgrade in 2011, the ship has been fitted with new weapons and sensors, which include the Barak surface-to-air missile system, an Oto Melara 76 mm gun, HUMSA sonar and Advanced Ship Control System for UAVs. INS ''Betwa'' (F39) is a guided missile frigate currently in service with the Indian Navy. The ship is named for the Betwa River. Operations Operation Sukoon ''Betwa'' was a part of Task Force 54, returning from the Mediterranean, when the 2006 Israel-Lebanon Conflict broke out. As a part of Operation Sukoon, ''Betwa'' participated in the evacuation of Indian citizens from Lebanon to Cyprus. National Defence Academy (India)
The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint defence service training institute of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services i.e. the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force train together before they go on to respective service academy for further pre-commission training. The NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. It is the first tri-service academy in the world. The alumni of NDA include 3 Param Vir Chakra recipients and 12 Ashoka Chakra recipients. NDA has also produced 27 service Chiefs of Staff till date. The current Chiefs of Staff of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force are all NDA alumni from the same course.
