GetUp! is an independent Progressivism, progressive Australian political activism, political activist group. It was launched in August 2005 to encourage Internet activism in Australia, though it has increasingly engaged in Community organizing, offline community organising. GetUp! is an independent, issue-based organisation. It advocates for progressive public policy change in Australia in the areas of the environment, economy, human rights, and democracy. GetUp does not make financial donations to, or receive donations from, registered Australian political parties, and does not run or fund candidates at Australian elections. History GetUp! was co-founded by Jeremy Heimans, David Madden (Australia), David Madden, both graduates of Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University, and Amanda Tattersall (who also founded the Sydney Alliance and is an associate professor at Sydney University). in August 2005. Bill Shorten
William Richard Shorten (born 12 May 1967) is an Australian former politician and trade unionist. He was the leader of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and Leader of the Opposition (Australia), Leader of the Opposition from 2013 to 2019. He also served as a Cabinet (Australia), cabinet minister in the Gillard government, Gillard (2011–2013), Rudd government (2013), Rudd (2013) and Albanese governments (2022–2025). Born in Melbourne, Shorten studied law at Monash University. He worked in politics and in law before becoming an organiser with the Australian Workers' Union (AWU) in 1994. He was elected state secretary of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Workers' Union, AWU in 1998 before becoming AWU national secretary in 2001. In this role, Shorten played a prominent role as a negotiator following the Beaconsfield Mine collapse in 2006, which first brought him to national prominence.
