George Town Dispensary Building
The George Town Dispensary building is a historical building in George Town, Penang, George Town within the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. It is situated at the corner of Beach Street, George Town, Beach Street and China Street Ghaut. History George Town Dispensary Limited was incorporated in 1901 after Dr. T. C. Avetoom disposed of his pharmacy, which he had established in Penang in 1889, to the company, receiving in return a major shareholding in the new company. After operating from a small shop in Beach Street, and with branches in Ipoh and Malacca City, Malacca, the company instructed architects Swan & Maclaren Architects, Swan & McLaren to design new premises which were opened in 1923. Beach Street, George Town
Beach Street is a major thoroughfare in George Town, Penang, George Town within the States and federal territories of Malaysia, Malaysian state of Penang. Part of the George Town Central Business District, Penang, city's central business district, it is also one of the oldest streets in Penang, having been created soon after the founding of the state by Captain Francis Light in 1786. The concentration of Malaysian and international banks around Beach Street has made George Town the financial hub within northern Malaysia. In addition, Beach Street is within the UNESCO World Heritage Site, thanks to the colonial architecture of the bank headquarters and other commercial buildings along the street. Administrative buildings built by the British also once stood along Beach Street; however, these buildings were destroyed during World War II.
