George Leonard Wallace
George Leonard Wallace known as George Wallace Jnr (16 May 1918 – 30 September 1968), was an Australian comedian, vaudeville, vaudevillian, and television personality. The son of George Wallace (Australian comedian), George Stephenson Wallace, he became a famous comedian in his own right, having considerable success on television in the late 1950s and 1960s, winning Logie Awards in 1963 and 1964. Wallace's television show, ''Theatre Royal (Australian TV series), Theatre Royal'', which originated in Brisbane, won six consecutive Logie Awards from 1962 to 1967. Early and personal life Wallace was born in Walkerston, Queensland to comedian George Stevenson "Onkus" Wallace and Margarita Edith Emma, née Nicholas, and first appeared on stage aged three in Sydney with his father. Wallace married Marjorie Bruce-Clarke on 10 January 1945 at St Philip's Church, Sydney, St Philip's Church of England, Sydney. Theatre Royal, Brisbane
The Theatre Royal was the ''second'' dedicated theatre built in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It opened in 1881 and was designed by Andrea Stombuco. The first venue on the same site was Mason's Concert r MusicHall (1865), which had been designed by William (Billy) Coote and constructed by John Bourne. Local press at the time suggested Mason's hall could seat 500 patrons. History Brisbane's first licensed theatre was opened at 80 Elizabeth Street by George Birkbeck Mason in 1865 and eventually named the Victoria Theatre. It was closed in 1880 and rebuilt, opening on 18 April 1881 as the Theatre Royal. It was again remodelled in 1911 when electric lights were installed. Tivoli Circuit
The Tivoli Circuit was a successful and popular Australian vaudeville entertainment circuit featuring revue, opera, ballet, dance, singing, musical comedy, old time black and white minstrel and even Shakespeare which flourished from 1893 to the 1950s, and featured local and international performers from the United States and the United Kingdom. The circuit suffered a catastrophic decline in popularity after the introduction of television in Australia in 1956, although embracing the new medium and feature live half hour broadcasts from Sydney. The last Tivoli show was staged in 1966 and the company briefly went into film exhibition in Melbourne. St Philip's Church, Sydney, is the oldest Anglican church parish in Australia. The church is located in the Sydney city centre between York Street, Clarence and Jamison Streets on a location known as Church Hill.
