George Buckston
George Moreton Buckston (12 March 1881 – 24 November 1942) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Cambridge University in 1903, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) and Derbyshire between 1905 and 1921. Buckston was born in Hope, Derbyshire and was educated at Eton and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He scored 45 and 4 for Eton v Harrow at Lord's in 1900. He played for Cambridge University from the 1903 season during which he played five games. He played one first-class game for MCC in 1904 which was against Derbyshire and then joined Derbyshire in the 1905 season. Buckston made his County Championship debut for Derbyshire against Northamptonshire. Derbyshire won the match by an innings margin, Northamptonshire limited to just 52 runs in their first innings. Buckston played no further matches during the 1905 season, and Derbyshire finished third-bottom in the Championship. Hope, Derbyshire
Hope is a village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Peak District, in England. The population at the 2011 Census was 864. It lies in the Hope Valley, at the point where Peakshole Water flows into the River Noe. To the north, Win Hill and Lose Hill stand either side of the Noe. History Pre-history There is evidence of ancient human occupation of the area around Hope. Mesolithic implements were found by a footpath at Win Hill. A sandstone or ironstone Neolithic axe was found near Hope before 1877 and is now held in the collection at Bolton Museum. The village is close to the Mam Tor hillfort in the adjacent parsh of Castleton and human remains and Bronze Age urns were found along with a possible barrow close to the summit of Lose Hill. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1906 represents the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty five years. It was their twelfth season in the County Championship and they finished bottom of the table having won two matches in the County Championship. 1906 season Derbyshire played 20 games in the County Championship, one match against the touring West Indians and one against MCC. Levi Wright was in his first season as captain. Wright was top scorer, although Maynard Ashcroft had a better average and scored two centuries. Billy Bestwick took most wickets with 111 . Guy Jackson
Guy Rolf Jackson (23 June 1896 – 21 February 1966) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1919 and 1936, being captain for nine years. Jackson was born at Ankerbold, Tupton, Derbyshire, the son of Brigadier G M Jackson, chairman of the Clay Cross Co., an iron and steel business. He was educated at Harrow School and in 1914 scored 59 against Eton at Lord's. He was due to go to Oxford University, but shortly after the outbreak of World War I, he was commissioned into the Derbyshire Yeomanry in October 1914. He served as a captain at Salonica in January 1918, and was awarded the Military Cross. He was also mentioned in despatches twice and also won the French Legion d’Honneur and the War Cross (Greece). For the first three years their only opponents were Lancashire. When Kent joined in 1874, by a quirk of scoring which was based on games lost, they were County Champion. The club was bedevilled by financial problems, and in 1888 the sporting press decided no longer to accord them first class status. Henry Allsopp, 1st Baron Hindlip DL (19 February 1811 – 2 April 1887), known as Sir Henry Allsopp, Bt, between 1880 and 1886, was a British businessman and Conservative politician. Background Allsopp was the third son of Samuel Allsopp (12 August 1780 – 26 February 1838), the son of James Allsopp and Anne Wilson, head of the brewery firm of Samuel Allsopp & Sons of Burton-on-Trent and his wife Frances Fowler. Malaria
Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals. Malaria causes symptoms that typically include fever, tiredness, vomiting, and headaches. Will Taylor (Derbyshire Cricketer)
William Thomas Taylor (14 April 1885 – 17 August 1976) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1905 and 1910. He served as secretary of Derbyshire for 51 years from 1908 to 1959. Taylor was born at Wirksworth, Derbyshire the son of Walter Taylor of Fern House and his wife Alice. His father was a manufacturer of artificial fertilizer. Taylor made his Derbyshire debut during the 1905 season, against Nottinghamshire but made little impression. In the 1906 season, he played a match during a West Indian tour of England, when he took two wickets, one of them being of Lebrun Constantine. Taylor played two games during the 1910 season, probably as a substitute, in which he was able to keep up his consistency between Test cricketer Arnold Warren and pre-war Derbyshire representative Frederick Bracey. John Chapman (cricketer, Born 1877)
John Chapman (11 March 1877 – 12 August 1956) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1909 and 1920, and captained the side from 1910 to 1912 and in 1920. Chapman was born at Frocester, Gloucestershire, the son of Charles Chapman a farmer. He was educated at Uppingham School and in 1899 was playing club cricket for the Incogniti. He also played for Sheffield Collegiate and Barnsley and captained the Yorkshire second team. He joined Derbyshire in the 1909 season, making his debut against Warwickshire when he was not out at the end of a drawn match. He played a full season and in his second match against Warwickshire made his top score of 198. In 1910 he was appointed captain and, again against Warwickshire, he made 165 while putting on 283 for the ninth wicket with Arnold Warren. Leonard Oliver (cricketer)
Leonard Oliver (18 October 1886 – 22 January 1948) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1908 and 1924. Oliver was born at Glossop, Derbyshire. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1908 season in a drawn match against Lancashire. In his first three years he scored moderately and was frequently caught out. He achieved his first century 104 not out against Leicestershire in the 1910 season. In the 1911 season his average almost doubled and he scored a century against Hampshire. In the following three years he maintained his form, scoring centuries against Warwickshire in the 1913 season and becoming the club's top scorer that year. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1920 was the English cricket club Derbyshire's fiftieth season. It was the club's twenty-second season in the County Championship and the most disastrous season ever experienced by any side since the County Championship was established. Derbyshire lost 17 of the 18 matches played and the other was abandoned without a ball being bowled. 1920 season John Chapman was captain for the season, having held the post twice before World War I.
