Gay Morning America
''Gay Morning America'' was a weekly volunteer-run variety show that aired on Manhattan public-access cable for three seasons from 1983 to 1985. For the first two seasons, the show ran for one hour on Friday mornings from 7:30-8:30 am EST, and was reduced to a 1/2 hour time slot on Saturday mornings from 11:30 am to 12:00 pm EST in the third and final season. The show also featured commercials for Greenwich Village gay establishments, as well as endorsements by the hosts which helped support the show. It originally aired on channel 59, W59AT. The program's archives are held in the collection of The LGBT Community Center National History Archive. History ''Gay Morning America'' was founded by George Sardi, Johnny Pool, and Lynn Lavner, all of whom either co-owned or frequently performed at the piano bar Waverly Waverly. Variety show, also known as variety arts or variety entertainment, is entertainment made up of a variety of acts including musical performances, sketch comedy, magic, acrobatics, juggling, and ventriloquism. It is normally introduced by a compère (master of ceremonies) or host. The variety format made its way from the Victorian era stage in Britain and America to radio and then television. Variety shows were a staple of English language television from the late 1940s into the 1980s. While the format is still widespread in some parts of the world, such as in the United Kingdom with the '' Royal Variety Performance'', the Philippines with ''Eat Bulaga!'' and '' It's Showtime'', and South Korea with '' Running Man'', the proliferation of multichannel television and evolving viewer tastes have affected the popularity of variety shows in the United States. Lynn Lavner
Lynn Lavner is an American comedian and musician from Brooklyn, New York. Much of her material is based around the facts that she is Jewish and a lesbian. She is frequently billed as "America's Most Politically Incorrect Entertainer." Lavner began her career in 1981 when she wrote the music to the lesbian-themed play ''Ladies! Don't Spit and Holler!'' After a showing of the play, a fan came up to her and asked if the soundtrack was available on the album. When Lavner told her it wasn't, the fan, who had recently inherited a large amount of money, offered to put up the money so the soundtrack could be adapted into an album. Lavner is also credited with writing the theme music - as well as starring in various segments - to the New York City-based public access program ''Gay Morning America'', which aired from 1983-1985. WNYX-LD (channel 34) is a low-power television station licensed to East Orange, New Jersey, United States, serving the New York City area. The station is owned by SagamoreHill Broadcasting. WNYX-LD's transmitter is located on Orange Mountain in West Orange, New Jersey. History WNYX originally began as a 24-hour music channel called The Box (American TV channel), The Box on channel 23 with the call letters W23BA. In 1996, the station was sold to Paxson Communications from Craig L. Fox, which made it a translator for its station in Bridgeport, Connecticut, WHAI-TV. After Paxson acquired WPXN-TV to serve as its New York outlet, the company sold off the Bridgeport station (which has since become WZME) and made W23BA a translator of WPXN. The following year, due to potential future interference from WHSI-TV (now WFTY-DT), who was assigned channel 23 for its digital signal, it moved to channel 34.
