Gay Kernan
Gay G. Kernan (born in 1947 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) is an American politician and a former Republican member of the New Mexico Senate representing District 42 beginning with her 2002 appointment by Governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Senator Shirley Bailey. On July 3, 2023, Kernan announced that she would resign from the Senate on August 1 for medical reasons. Education Kernan earned her BA from University of Mississippi. New Mexico Legislature
The New Mexico Legislature ( es, Legislatura de Nuevo México) is the legislative branch of the state government of New Mexico. It is a bicameral body made up of the New Mexico House of Representatives and the New Mexico Senate. History The New Mexico Legislature was established when New Mexico officially became a state and was admitted to the union in 1912. In 1922, Bertha M. Paxton became the first woman elected to the New Mexico Legislature, serving one term in the House of Representatives. Session structure and operations The Legislature meets every year, in regular session on the third Tuesday in January. Gary Johnson
Gary Earl Johnson (born January 1, 1953) is an American businessman, author, and politician. He served as the 29th governor of New Mexico from 1995 to 2003 as a member of the Republican Party. He was the Libertarian Party nominee for President of the United States in the 2012 and 2016 elections. He was also the Libertarian nominee in the 2018 U.S. Senate election in New Mexico. Johnson entered politics for the first time by running for governor of New Mexico in 1994 on a low-tax, anti-crime platform, promising a "common-sense business approach". He defeated incumbent Democratic governor Bruce King, 50% to 40%. He cut the 10% annual growth in the budget, in part by using the gubernatorial veto 200 times during his first six months.
