Garret Hobart
Garret Augustus Hobart (June 3, 1844 – November 21, 1899) was an American businessman and politician who was the 24th vice president of the United States, serving from 1897 until his death in 1899, under President William McKinley. A member of the Republican Party (United States), Republican Party, Hobart was an influential New Jersey businessman and political operative prior to his vice presidency. Hobart was born in Long Branch, New Jersey, on the Jersey Shore, and grew up in nearby Marlboro Township, New Jersey, Marlboro. He attended Rutgers University, Rutgers College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, New Brunswick, and read law under Paterson, New Jersey, Paterson-based attorney Socrates Tuttle. He both studied with Tuttle and married his daughter, Jennie Tuttle Hobart, Jennie. Although he rarely set foot in a courtroom, Hobart became wealthy as a corporate lawyer. 1896 Republican National Convention
The 1896 Republican National Convention was held in a temporary structure south of the St. Louis City Hall in St. Louis, Missouri, from June 16 to June 18, 1896. Former Governor William McKinley of Ohio was nominated for president on the first ballot with 661½ votes to 84½ for House Speaker Thomas Brackett Reed of Maine, 61½ votes for Senator Matthew S.
