Gardener
A gardener is someone who practices gardening, either professionally or as a hobby. Description A gardener is any person involved in gardening, arguably the oldest occupation, from the hobbyist in a residential garden, the home-owner supplementing the family food with a small Kitchen garden, vegetable garden or orchard, to an employee in a plant nursery or the head gardener in a great house, large estate. Garden design and maintenance The garden designer is someone who will design the garden, and the gardener is the person who will undertake the work to produce the desired outcome. Design The term gardener is also used to describe garden designers and landscape architects, who are involved chiefly in the design of gardens, rather than the practical aspects of horticulture. Garden design is considered to be an art in most cultures, distinguished from gardening, which generally means ''garden maintenance''. Gardner (surname)
Gardner is a surname of English, Scottish and Irish origin. Most sources say it is an occupational surname that comes from the word "gardener". Other sources claim that it is derived from the old English words ''gar-dyn'' meaning "warrior", "one who bears arms". In Ireland, the surname is an anglicized form of the Gaelic ''Mac'' ''Gairnéir''. Variants include Gardyner, Gardener, Gardenar, Gardinier, Gardiner, and Gardner; the last two are the most common today. There is a tradition held by some of the descendants of William Gardiner (son of Benoni), son of George of Newport, that William won his crest at Acre in 1191, by chopping through the shoulder of a Saracen who was about to kill Richard Coeur de Lion or Richard the Lionheart, hence the Saracen's head on the coat of arms. Karl Friedrich Von Gaertner
Karl Friedrich von Gaertner (or Carl Friedrich von Gärtner) (1 May 1772 – 1 September 1850) was a well-known German botanist, and the son of Joseph Gaertner. He was a pioneer in the study of hybrids, and he is considered an important influence on Gregor Mendel. Gärtner, who was a protestant, challenged the doctrine of Carl Linnaeus of the "new special creation" which stated that new species of vegetation could arise through hybridization. He defended the stability of species, and argued that although the transmutation of species was evidently possible, the new species would not last because of a ''law of reversion'' which prevented them from spreading freely. As was reported in the words of Mendel: Gärtner is mentioned 17 times in Gregor Mendel's short famous paper ''Experiments on Plant Hybridization'' and 32 times in the first edition of Charles Darwin's ''On the Origin of Species ''On the Origin of Species'' (or, more completely, ''On the Origin of Species by M ...
