Gabriëlle Popken
Gabriëlle Popken (born 21 August 1983) is a Dutch former politician for the Party for Freedom. She served in the Senate (Netherlands), Senate between 2011 and 2017 and subsequently in the House of Representatives (Netherlands), House of Representatives between 2017 and 2020. Youth and education Popken was born in Geleen on 21 August 1983. Between 2003 and 2007 she studied law at Maastricht University, earning a bachelor's degree. The subsequent year she earned a master's degree in commercial law at the same university. Political career She became a parliamentary assistant to Geert Wilders on 4 May 2009. Popken became a member of the Senate for the Party for Freedom on 7 June 2011. Popken took maternity leave per 8 September 2015 and was replaced by Peter van Dijk, it was the first time in the history of the Senate that a senator was replaced due to a maternity leave. For the 2015 Dutch Senate election, 12 electoral lists were successfully submitted, totalling 261 candidates. The 75 seats were awarded to party lists, with candidates over the preference threshold awarded a seat first if available and the other seats awarded based on position on the list. The preference threshold for this election was 2,255 weighted votes (same as the electoral threshold). Two candidate would have not been elected based on position on the list, but received enough preference votes: Alexander Kops and Alexander van Hattem (both Party for Freedom). Elections of the Dutch Senate were held on 26 May 2015. The elected senators were sworn in on 9 June 2015. Electoral system The Senate is elected by the members of the States-Provincial of the country's twelve provinces, who had been directly elected by the citizens two months earlier, in the 2015 provincial elections. The value of a vote is determined by the population of the province in which the voter is a member of the States-Provincial. Sietse Rindert Fritsma (born 31 March 1972) is a Dutch politician and former civil servant. As a member of the Party for Freedom (Partij voor de Vrijheid) he has been a member of the House of Representatives since 1 September 2020. The Senate ( , literally "First Chamber of the States General", or simply ; sometimes ) is the upper house of the States General of the Netherlands, States General, the legislature of the Netherlands. Its 75 members are elected on lists by the members of the twelve States-Provincial and four electoral colleges for the Senate every four years, within three months of the provincial elections.
