Biography Born in Aarhus, Denmark, on 18 April 1918, Axel spent most of his childhood in Paris in a wealthy Danish manufacturer's family. In 1935, at age 17 following the family's economic collapse, he moved to Denmark and trained as a cabinet maker. In 1942, Axel was admitted to the acting school at the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen. After graduating in 1945, he returned to France where he spent five years on stage in Paris, including at the Théâtre de l'Athénée under theatre director Louis Jouvet. '' Duel of Angels '' (1963) is an English-language adaptation by Christopher Fry of the play ''Pour Lucrèce'' (1944) by French dramatist Jean Giraudoux. The play is based on the story of Lucretia, the virtuous Roman housewife who was raped and, finding no support from her husband and his friends, is driven to suicide. This is the same legend that was used by Shakespeare in ''The Rape of Lucrece''. Giraudoux gives the Roman legend a new locale, setting his drama in nineteenth-century Aix-en-Provence in southern France. Karen Blixen
Baroness Karen Christenze von Blixen-Finecke (born Dinesen; 17 April 1885 – 7 September 1962) was a Danish author who wrote works in Danish and English. She is also known under her pen names Isak Dinesen, used in English-speaking countries, Tania Blixen, used in German-speaking countries, Osceola, and Pierre Andrézel. Blixen is best known for ''Out of Africa'', an account of her life while living in Kenya, and for one of her stories, ''Babette's Feast'', both of which have been adapted into Academy Award–winning motion pictures. She is also noted, particularly in Denmark, for her ''Seven Gothic Tales''. The first country in the world to legitimize pornography was Denmark in 1967. That year, the country legalized pornographic literature. Subsequently, on July 1, 1969, Denmark became the first nation in the world to legalize pictorial and audiovisual pornography, which helped further promote the Golden Age of Porn (1969–1984) in modern American culture, and later, in many other countries throughout the world. People in Denmark have had free access to such materials ever since. There still are a few regulations: for example, pornography must be placed out of the view of children, and may not be sold to persons under the age of 15. ''Det kære legetøj'' (The Dear Toy, also known as ''Danish Blue''), made in 1968 by director Gabriel Axel, is a Danish feature film advocating the legalizing of pornography. A campaigning film, it mixes interviews, reconstructions and fiction in playful fashion, seeking to ridicule and undermine Denmark's censorship laws at the time. The film may be said to have been successful in its objective, as a year after its release Denmark completely legalized pornography. The film was banned in France but released in both England and the United States. It started a whole wave of documentary films about pornography in Denmark.
