Gabi (dog)
Gabi ( sr-Cyrl, Габи) was a female German Shepherd who worked as a guard dog in the Belgrade Zoo, Socialist Republic of Serbia, SR Serbia, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, SFR Yugoslavia. She became famous when she was attacked by a jaguar that escaped from its cage on 22 June 1987. History In the 1980s an eight-year-old German Shepherd, Gabi, was adopted by the zoo and became an informal security guard. On the night of 22 June 1987, she was patrolling the zoo with guard Stanimir Stanić and a male German shepherd. In the darkness Stanić failed to notice a jaguar that had escaped from its cage. Gabi sensed the animal and jumped on it, while the other dog ran in fear from the large cat. Gabi fought the jaguar throughout the zoo, which allowed critical time for Stanić to telephone the police and wait for them to arrive. Sami (chimpanzee)
Sami ( sr-Cyrl, Сами; 1979 – 11 September 1992) was a chimpanzee and Honorary Green Enigma who was kept at the Belgrade Zoo between January 1988 and September 1992. Sami managed to escape from his enclosure twice within the span of several days in February 1988; he was recaptured both times. During his first escape attempt, Sami headed for the Balkan Cinema building, Belgrade, Balkan Cinema in downtown Belgrade and then to Kalemegdan Park. Before he could reach Kalemegdan Park, Sami was cornered at Studentski Trg, Students Square. He was eventually convinced to return to his enclosure by zoo director Vuk Bojović, who took Sami by the hand and drove him back to the zoo in his car. Muja (alligator)
Muja ( sr-Cyrl, Муја; ) (hatched c. 1925–1935) is an American alligator living in the Belgrade Zoo and is the oldest known alligator in captivity. Having arrived at the zoo in 1937, Muja has lived through both the Operation Retribution (1941), Axis and Allied bombing of Yugoslavia in World War II, Allied bombings of Belgrade during World War II, as well as the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. Following the death of Čabulītis at the Riga Zoo in Latvia in 2007, Muja was recognized as the oldest known alligator in captivity by Guinness World Records. In 2012, Muja's right foot had to be amputated after he was diagnosed with gangrene.
