GNR (band)
GNR is a Portuguese pop rock band formed in Porto in 1980 and currently consists of vocalist Rui Reininho, bassist Jorge Romão and the only remaining founding member drummer Tóli César Machado. The formation of the group, that shares its acronym (Grupo Novo Rock, Portuguese for New Rock Group) with the Guarda Nacional Republicana The National Republican Guard () or GNR is the national gendarmerie force of Portugal. Members of the GNR are military personnel, subject to military law and organisation, unlike the agents of the civilian Public Security Police (PSP). Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Post-punk
Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad genre of music that emerged in late 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians departed from punk's fundamental elements and raw simplicity, instead adopting a broader, more experimental approach that encompassed a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences. Valentim de Carvalho () is a Portuguese record label founded in 1914. History The company started selling phonograph, musical instruments and music since its 1914 foundation at the Rua da Assunção, Lisbon. It distributes EMI in Portugal since 1920. VDC also carved names in the Portuguese music industry like Amália Rodrigues, António Variações and, most recently, Os Pontos Negros. It has two sub-labels: Popular and NorteSul. Rui Manuel Reininho Braga best known as Rui Reininho (born 28 February 1955) is a Portuguese singer. Since 1981, he has been the lead vocalist of Portuguese rock band GNR. As a singer-songwriter of numerous lyrics and songs, he is one of the most beloved, and often controversial, icons of the Portuguese rock scene. The National Republican Guard () or GNR is the national gendarmerie force of Portugal. Members of the GNR are military personnel, subject to military law and organisation, unlike the agents of the civilian Public Security Police (PSP). The GNR is responsible for the preventive police and highway patrol in 94% of Portuguese territory. At national level, GNR also has duties of customs enforcement, coastal control, nature protection, search and rescue operations and state ceremonial guards of honor.
