Fresh Records (UK)
Fresh Records was a British independent record label, and distributor based in the United Kingdom. Most popular (and successful) in the early 1980s, the label once supported punk groups like The Wall, UK Decay, Play Dead, Family Fodder, Cuddly Toys, The Dark, Wilko Johnson and Big Hair and competed with labels such as 4AD. The sleeve-notes from Anagram's ''Fresh Records Punk Singles Collection'' reads: "The seeds of Fresh Records were sown in Alex Howe's Wretched Records stall in London's Soho Market in 1978. Alex also ran a mail-order service, and demand from other shops for the Buzzcock's 'Spiral Scratch' EP led him to start Fresh Distribution. Bands such as the Art Attacks, Second Layer, UK Decay and Manufactured Romance came to the stall looking for an outlet for their records. Independent Record Label
An independent record label (or indie label) is a record label that operates without the funding or distribution of major record labels; they are a type of small- to medium-sized enterprise, or SME. The labels and artists are often represented by trade associations in their country or region, which in turn are represented by the international trade body, the Worldwide Independent Network (WIN). Many of the labels started as producers and distributors of specific genres of music, such as jazz music, or represent something new and non-mainstream, such as Elvis Presley in the early days. Indies release rock, soul, R&B, jazz, blues, gospel, reggae, hip hop, and world music. Lovestation
Lovestation are a British electronic dance music group formed by Vicky Aspinall in 1989, who subsequently worked with co-producer David Morgan. Gospel singer-songwriter Lisa Hunt has also appeared on several Lovestation records. Active throughout the 1990s, they released their sole debut album, ''Soulsation'' in 2000, containing '90s hits such as "Love Come Rescue Me", "Shine on Me" and "Best of My Love". They are best known for their cover of Womack & Womack's " Teardrops", which reached No. 14 on the UK Singles Chart. Fresh Records (US)
Fresh Records was a New York City-based independent record label that operated from 1985 to 1992. The label was a subsidiary of Sleeping Bag Records that sold hip hop music. The label's roster included EPMD, Nice & Smooth, Just-Ice and T La Rock; house-music pioneer Todd Terry; and electro artists Hanson & Davis and Chocolette. Kurtis Mantronik, in addition to being the musician of the hip-hop duo Mantronix (signed to the parent label Sleeping Bag Records), did A&R for both labels. EPMD rhymed about its record-signing experience with the label in the song "Please Listen to My Demo", from the 1989 album '' Unfinished Business'' ("Signed on the dotted line, now we Fresh Records members."). Serious Danger (born Richard Philips) is an English speed garage musician and record producer. First becoming prominent in 1997, he was quite popular in the London area. Signed to Fresh Records, his best-known releases are "Deeper" (1997) and "High Noon" (1998). He also remixed " God Is a DJ" (1998) by Faithless. Strike (band)
Strike was a British electronic dance music band formed in 1994 consisting of Matt Cantor (later of Freestylers), Andy Gardner (later of Plump DJs) and the vocalist Victoria Newton. Career Strike formed towards the end of 1994. A chance vocal session for Victoria Newton at the studios of Fresh Records in Ladbroke Grove, landed her the role as the lead singer. Strike's first single, "Formula One", entered the lower reaches of the UK top 100 chart. They did not break through until " U Sure Do" was released in December 1994, originally charting at number 31 in the UK Singles Chart, only to re-enter the chart and climb to number 4 in April 1995, due to the track becoming a major club hit. Jungle Records is a British independent record label formed in 1982, specialising in punk rock, post punk, gothic and alternative releases. From 1982 to 1986 they were also active as a record distributor and were associate members of the Cartel, holding the exclusive right to sell not just the Cartel's but all indie records to the Our Price Records chain, including by Depeche Mode, New Order and The Smiths.
