Freeman House (Guilderland, New York)
Freeman House is a historic home located at Guilderland in Albany County, New York. The original house (the center and eastern section) was built about 1734; a western addition was built about 1750; and a rear ell was added about 1800. It is a two-story Dutch Colonial house with a gable roof and built of large, smooth finished beams. It is one of the finest and oldest colonial period buildings in Guilderland, and may be the oldest frame house in Guilderland. Following the American Revolution, the home belonged to Revolutionary War veteran Barent Mynderse. When photographer Nelson E. Baldwin photographed the house in 1937 as part of the Historic American Buildings Survey, it was covered in a synthetic brick siding, which has since been removed. A historic marker stands in front of the house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Guilderland, New York
Guilderland is a town in Albany County, New York, United States. In the 2020 census, the town had a population of 36,848. The town is named for the Gelderland province in the Netherlands. The town of Guilderland is on the central-northwest border of the county. It is just west of Albany, the capital of the U.S. state of New York. History Guilderland was originally a part of the Manor of Rensselaerswyck that Patroon Kiliaen van Rensselaer began in 1629 as part of the New Netherland colony. By the end of the 17th century, Dutch settlers from Albany and Schenectady began to establish farms in the area, beginning first along the banks of the Normans Kill. In 1712, a group of emigrants from the Rhine Valley in present-day Germany passed through the town on their way to Schoharie. They were the first to record and name the Helderberg Escarpment, originally Hellebergh meaning "bright or clear mountain".
