Free newspapers are distributed Gratis versus libre, free of charge, often in central places in cities and towns, on public transport, with other newspapers, or separately door-to-door. The revenues of such newspapers are based on advertising. They are published at different levels of frequencies, such as daily, weekly or monthly. Origins Outside the U.S. Germany In 1885 the :de:Lübecker Nachrichten, ''General-Anzeiger für Lübeck und Umgebung'' (Germany) was launched. The paper was founded in 1882 by Charles Coleman (1852–1936) as a free twice-a-week advertising paper in the Northern German town of Lübeck. In 1885 the paper went daily. From the beginning the ''General-Anzeiger für Lübeck'' had a mixed model, for 60 pfennig it was home delivered for three months. Unknown, however, is when the free distribution ended. Dean Stanley Lesher (August 4, 1903 – May 13, 1993) was an American newspaper publisher, founder of the ''Contra Costa Times'' and the Contra Costa Newspapers chain. He was also a well-known philanthropist in the San Francisco Bay Area. Life Lesher was born August 4, 1903, the son of Margaret and David Lesher, in Williamsport, Maryland. His first business experience began when he opened a small ice cream stand at the age of 10. When he was 12, he gave that up for a job in a local tannery partially owned by his father. In his high school years Lesher found work as a railroad waybill clerk and was active in sports, playing football, baseball, and soccer. He attended the University of Maryland, graduating magna cum laude, and proceeded to earn a law degree from Harvard University. He was married to Kathryn Lesher who would die of cancer in 1971.
