François Bourgoing (singer)
François Bourgoing (15..–16..) was a member of the Oratory of Jesus, author of two books on the plain song in use in his order, and active in the first half of the 17th century. He must not be mistaken for François Bourgoing (priest) (1585-1662), third superior general of this order. Biography His life remains rather obscure; he was born in Bourges and we know that he entered the Paris Oratory on 26 November 1616. The second Assembly of the Order charged him with the task of improving the singing of the Oratorians and publishing a collection along these lines (this would be the ''Brevis psalmodiæ ratio'' of 1634), which suggests that he was a singer of his church (in 1634 he is said to be a priest and a ''chori moderatore''). This evolution of the chant had been desired by Cardinal Pierre de Bérulle, and bore fruit since the house on rue Saint-Honoré, which was quite frequented by the court, became famous for the quality of the chant heard there. The Congregation of the Oratory of Jesus and Mary Immaculate (french: Société de l'Oratoire de Jésus et de Marie Immaculée, la, Congregatio Oratorii Iesu et Mariæ), best known as the French Oratory, is a society of apostolic life of Catholic priests founded in 1611 in Paris, France, by Pierre de Bérulle (1575–1629), later a cardinal of the Catholic Church. They are known as Bérullians or Oratorians. The French Oratory had a determinant influence on the French school of spirituality throughout the 17th century. It is separate and distinct from the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, which served as its inspiration. Amédée Gastoué
Amédée Henri Gustave Noël Gastoué (19 March 1873 – 1 June 1943) was a French musicologist and composer. Biography A Kapellmeister at the , professor of gregorian chant at the Schola Cantorum of Paris, Gastoué was particularly interested in Byzantine music, that of the Middle Ages and Armenian musical art. He also taught choral chant and Medieval music at the Institut catholique de Paris, the Collège Stanislas and the Lycée Montaigne. He was president of the (1934–1936) and remains known for his studies and writings. He was raised to the dignity of Commander of the Pontifical Order of Pope Gregory I by Pope Pius X. Gastoué is the great-great-grandfather of Emmanuel Trenque, himself an organist and choral conductor.
