The University of New England (UNE) is a public university in Australia with approximately 22,500 higher education students. Its original and main campus is located in the city of Armidale in northern central New South Wales. UNE was the first Australian university established outside a state capital city. Each year, the university offers students more than $5 million in scholarships, prizes, and bursaries and more than $18 million for staff and students involved in research. In the 2019 Student Experience Survey, UNE recorded the sixth-highest student satisfaction rating out of all Australian universities, and the highest student satisfaction rating out of all public universities in New South Wales, with an overall satisfaction rating of 83.2. Trevenna
Trevenna is the residence of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England, in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. The house was built in 1892 and is located off Trevenna Road on the western side of the main campus in Armidale. There is no public access to the property or gardens, but the gardens have been open for public viewing, on several occasions in recent years. History Designed by Canadian-born, Boston-trained architect, John Horbury Hunt (1838–1904), Trevenna was originally the home of the Wrights, a prominent New England family of graziers. It was originally built for Mrs Eliza Jane Wright. The homestead and its grounds were bequeathed to UNE as the Vice-Chancellor's residence in 1960 by Mrs Florence May Wilson. The University of New England Students' Association (UNESA) is the representative body for students at the University of New England, Australia. Its vision statement describes a desire to: “Represent without fear or favour the students of the University of New England. To encourage participation in a fair and just tertiary experience through shared higher thinking.” As of July 2018, Fair Trading NSW has decided to shut down UNESA due to governance issues. Annabelle Duncan
Annabelle Duncan (born in Nelson, New Zealand in 1953), is a microbiologist who held the post of Vice-Chancellor at the University of New England (UNE) from 2014-2019. Early life and education Duncan was born the youngest of two girls to parents who met in England. She won a scholarship to study pharmacy at University of Otago, however changed to microbiology, completing a Master of Science thesis on antiobiotic-resistant bacteria. She moved to Australia in 1981 or 1982 and completed her doctorate at La Trobe University and a postdoctorate at Monash University. Brigid R. John Watkins (Australian Politician)
John Arthur Watkins (born 7 December 1955) is a former Deputy Premier of New South Wales, serving between 2005 until his resignation from Parliament in 2008. Watkins has been the Chief Executive Officer of Alzheimer's Australia (NSW) since 2008; the Chairman of Calvary healthcare since 2011; and the eighth Chancellor of the University of New England, serving between 2013 and 2014. Watkins was an elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly representing the electorates of Gladesville (between 1995 and 1999) and then Ryde (between 1999 and 2008) for the Labor Party. Drummond And Smith College
Drummond and Smith College, a residential college within the University of New England (Australia), is currently closed to new residents. History Drummond and Smith College, a combination of the original Drummond College and SH Smith House, has had a long association with education in Armidale. When the Armidale Teachers’ College (ATC) was established in 1928 there was a need to provide accommodation for the women students and this was met by using Girrahween a building opposite Central Park, which had originally been constructed as a private boarding school for girls. In 1930 the residence was renamed after the then Director of Education in New South Wales, Stephen Henry Smith. S H Smith House remained as a residence for ATC until 1972, then continued as a residence for Armidale College of Advanced Education students until amalgamation with the University in 1989. Robb College is a residential college located within the University of New England in Armidale, NSW Australia. It provides alternative living arrangements to over 200 male and female students that come from different areas all over Australia. Students residing at Robb college, are colloqusalised as 'Robbers'. Apart from accommodation, residents eat meals with each other and there is a high level of social, academic and sporting culture that exists within the college which differentiates it from conventional living arrangements. Mary White College
Mary White College is a residential college at the University of New England (UNE), Australia, established in 1957. The College was named after Mary White of Saumarez, a member of the Advisory Council of the then New England University College from its inception in 1938 until her death in 1948. Born in 1882, she was also noted as a photographer and woodcarver. The College opened in March 1958, originally an all-girls college, though it has subsequently become co-educational. Blocks 1, 2 and 3 were fully completed by March 1959. A fourth block, with the Basement Common Room, was added in June, 1963 and a fifth block, with a new dining hall, was added in 1967. Earle Page College
Earle Page College is a residential college of the University of New England located in Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. The college accommodates roughly 300 students. History The college is named after Dr Earle Christmas Grafton Page, who was the first Chancellor of the University of New England in 1954. It originated in 1963 as an all-male set of houses in town. Most Page students who were living in town had to travel to the campus for all meals by public transport. After its opening, students slowly moved into the current buildings. EPC began as an all-male college; however, females have been admitted since 1973. Austin College is a college at the University of New England, Armidale, NSW, Australia. It is the second youngest of the established colleges, opening as an all girls college in 1972 . It proceeded to change to a co-ed tertiary residential college, which it remains to this day. It has the capacity to house 288 students at any one time during the year. It caters for both internal and external students and serves as residency for many travelling university and school sporting teams.
