Francesco Branciforte
Francesco Branciforte Barresi (15 March 1575 – 23 February 1622) was an aristocrat, Marquis of Militello and 4th prince of Butera, as well as a notable patron of the arts and sciences in Sicily. Biography He was born in Militello in Val di Catania, the eldest son to Fabrizio, 3rd prince of Butera and his wife Caterina Barresi Branciforte, marchesa of Militello. He was raised in Spain, in the household of his paternal grandmother Dorotea Barresi Santapau, married to the Prince of Pietraperzia. In 1605, Francesco inherited the title of Marchese di Militello. Francesco spent much of his life in Militello, marrying Giovanna d'Austria, daughter of John of Austria. Militello In Val Di Catania
Militello in Val di Catania ( Sicilian: ''Militeḍḍu'') is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Metropolitan City of Catania in the Italian region Sicily, located about southeast of Palermo and about southwest of Catania, on the last slopes of the Hyblaean Mountains. It has a railway station on the line Catania-Gela. History Despite remains of prehistorical settlements and legends of a Roman foundation, the first mention of Militello dates from 1000 AD, when it became a marquisate under the Cammarana. The golden age of Militello was during the early 17th century, under the government of Prince Francesco Branciforte. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693, but the subsequent restoration added numerous architectural and artistic works of art. Butera ( Sicilian: ''Vutera'') is an Italian town and a ''comune'' in the province of Caltanissetta, in the southern part of the island of Sicily. It is bounded by the ''comuni'' of Gela, Licata, Mazzarino, Ravanusa and Riesi. It has a population of 4,653 (2017) and is from Caltanissetta, the province's capital. Etymology The etymology of the name ''Butera'' is debated. One hypothesis is that the name is of Arabic origin. Butera was called ''Butirah'' by the Arabs, which means "steep place". The Arabic demonym ''al-Buthayri'' was used to refer to a person from Butera (Arabic: ''Buthayr''). Butera is also a common name of people in Rwanda (East Africa) where most of men and boys are given this name as a sign of strength. Another would suggest that the name "Butera" is of Greek origin, and several contemporary scholars tend to reject the Arabic theory of Butera's etymology. Fabrizio Branciforte (1551–1624) was an aristocrat, 3rd prince of Butera and Count of Mazarin. He was knighted into the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1607. Pietro Carrera
Pietro Carrera (July 12, 1573 – September 18, 1647) was an Italian chess player, historian, priest and author. Biography Pietro Carrera born in Sicily, in Militello in Val di Catania ( Province of Catania), located in the Valley of Noto; here he grew up in the old colony of San Vito. He was the son of Donna Antonia Severino (mother) and Mariano Carrera, a traditional craftsman who entered the priesthood after his wife's death. During his studies in the Seminario Diocesiano of Siracusa, he had the opportunity to visit many different Sicilian cities. As a result of his travels he met Paolo Boi, so-called "The Siracusan", in the town of Palermo during 1597. After taking his vows, he first become the chaplain at the church of S. Filippo Paladini
Filippo Paladino (1544 -1614) was an Italian painter. Biography He was born near Florence in Tuscany and remained there until circa 1586 when he was imprisoned and subsequently exiled to Malta. From there, he moved to Sicily where he was active the rest of his life. He painted an altarpiece for the church of Sant'Ignazio all'Olivella. Mario Minniti
Mario Minniti (8 December 1577 – 22 November 1640) was an Italian artist active in Sicily after 1606. Born in Syracuse, Sicily, he arrived in Rome in 1593, where he became the friend, collaborator, and model of the key Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610). His main fame today is his identification, or proposed identification, as a model in many of Caravaggio's early works, including ''Boy with a Basket of Fruit'', '' The Fortune Teller'', '' The Musicians'', ''Boy Bitten by a Lizard'' (probable), ''Bacchus'', ''The Lute Player'', '' The Calling of Saint Matthew'', and '' The Martyrdom of Saint Matthew''.
