Football in Berlin, the capital of Germany, has a long history. The city contributed 24 of the 86 founders of the DFB, the German Football Association. The DFB Cup Final has been held every year at the Olympiastadion since 1985. The two main football clubs in Berlin are Hertha BSC and 1. FC Union Berlin. Hertha BSC, a founder of the DFB, played in the West German system during the Cold War. 1. FC Union Berlin played in the East German system. The Olympic Stadium hosted the later stages of football at the 1936 Summer Olympics, with the other matches played at smaller grounds in the city. The ground was also a venue in the 1974 FIFA World Cup group containing both West and East Germany. Brandenburg Gate
The Brandenburg Gate (german: Brandenburger Tor ) is an 18th-century Neoclassical architecture, neoclassical monument in Berlin, built on the orders of Prussian king Frederick William II of Prussia, Frederick William II after Prussian invasion of Holland, restoring the Orangism (Dutch Republic), Orangist power by suppressing the Patriottentijd, Dutch popular unrest. One of the best-known landmarks of Germany, it was built on the site of a former city gate that marked the start of the road from Berlin to the town of Brandenburg an der Havel, which used to be the capital of the Margraviate of Brandenburg. 1923 German Football Championship
The 1923 German football championship, the 16th edition of the competition, was won by Hamburger SV, defeating Union Oberschöneweide 3–0 in the final. For Hamburger SV it was the first national championship, having played in the inconclusive 1922 final and declined the championship. Hamburg would make another appearance in the final in the following season but lose to 1. FC Nürnberg, followed by another championship in 1928, won against another club from Berlin, Hertha BSC. Union Oberschöneweide made its sole championship final appearance in 1923 and would eventually evolve into what is now 1. FC Union Berlin. Sp.Vg. Blau-Weiß 1890 Berlin, generally referred to as Blau-Weiß 90, was a German association football club based in the Mariendorf district of Berlin. Oberschöneweide
Oberschöneweide (, literally ''Upper Schöneweide'') is a German locality (''Ortsteil'') within the Berlin borough (''Bezirk'') of Treptow-Köpenick. It is, with Niederschöneweide (''Lower Schöneweide''), part of the geographic area of Schöneweide. Until 2001 it was part of the former borough of Köpenick. History First mentioned in 1598 as ''Schöne Weyde'', it became an industrial town at the end of the 19th century. In 1920 it merged into Berlin as a result of the Greater Berlin Act. The Berlin territorial reform, in effect from 1 April 1938, also affected the districts of Treptow and Köpenick. Stadion An der Alten Försterei (; '' en, Stadium at the old forester's house'') is a football stadium in Köpenick and the largest single-purpose football stadium in the German capital of Berlin. It has been home to football club 1. FC Union Berlin and its forerunners since its opening in 1920. The stadium's capacity was last redeveloped in 2009 and expanded in 2013. Some of the redevelopment work was carried out by over 2,300 Union Berlin supporters volunteering their services. During league matches the arena features a total capacity of 22,012. The Oberliga Berlin-Brandenburg, also known as the VBB-Oberliga, was the highest association football competition in the Prussian Province of Brandenburg, including Berlin, from 1923 to 1933. The competition was disbanded in 1933 with the rise of the Nazis to power.
