Florida Orchestra
The Florida Orchestra is an American orchestra based in the tri-city area of Tampa, Clearwater, Florida, Clearwater and St. Petersburg, Florida, St. Petersburg, Florida. It was founded as the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony upon the 1968 merger of the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and the Tampa Philharmonic. The present name was adopted in 1984. The Florida Orchestra gives some 100 concerts yearly. Series include the “Tampa Bay Times Masterworks,” “Raymond James Pops,” “Coffee Concerts,” “Rock Concerts,” and the free “Pops in the Park” and “Youth Concerts.” History The Florida Orchestra's history is steeped in orchestral tradition from both sides of Tampa Bay. Michael Francis (conductor)
Michael Francis (born 1976) is a British conductor. Biography Francis learnt the double bass as a youth. He was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra, and graduated in 1997 from The Cardiff University School of Music. He played the double bass for the London Symphony Orchestra before he began conducting. His first public performance as conductor of a major orchestra occurred in January 2007 when he deputised for Valery Gergiev. In Europe, Francis became chief conductor and artistic adviser to the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in 2012, and held the post through 2016. In December 2016, Francis first guest-conducted the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz. In December 2018, the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz announced the appointment of Francis as its next chief conductor, effective with the 2019-2020 season, with an initial contract of 5 years. Jeff Tyzik
Jeff Tyzik (born August 1, 1951) is an American conductor, arranger, and trumpeter. He has recorded jazz albums as a soloist and arranged pop and jazz music for orchestras. Early life and education Tyzik, born in Hyde Park, New York, started playing cornet at age nine, after being inspired by the buglers in an Independence Day parade in nearby Poughkeepsie. He switched to trumpet at age 11. He attended the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, earning Bachelor of Music (1973) and Master of Music (1977) degrees. Career While at Eastman, Tyzik met Chuck Mangione, a flugelhornist from Rochester who was teaching at the school. He worked with Mangione between 1973 and 1980 as lead trumpeter in Mangione's band and as co-producer of four albums. The Tampa Bay Lightning (colloquially known as the Bolts) are a professional ice hockey team based in Tampa, Florida. Ruth Eckerd Hall
Ruth Eckerd Hall is a performing arts venue, located in Clearwater, Florida, in the Tampa Bay area and is part of the Richard B. Baumgardner Center for the Performing Arts. The concert hall is named after Ruth Eckerd, the wife of businessman Jack Eckerd, and is a regular performance venue for the Florida Orchestra. Its 2,180-seat auditorium features continental seating, with no center aisle. History In 1977, the Kapok Tree Corporation donated to the City of Clearwater with the stipulation that a performing arts center be built on the property. Skitch Henderson
Lyle Russel "Skitch" Henderson (January 27, 1918 – November 1, 2005) was a pianist, conductor, and composer. His nickname "Skitch" came from his ability to "re-sketch" a song in a different key. Bing Crosby suggested that he should use the name professionally. Early years As his career developed, Henderson often claimed to have been born in Birmingham, England, also adding "Cedric" to his name.
