Florida, Cuba
Florida () is a municipality and city in the Camagüey Province of Cuba. It is located north-west of Camagüey, along the Carretera Central highway. The city was established in 1907, and the municipality was established in 1924. Of all the municipalities of the Cuban province of Camagüey, Florida is third in area size. The name is Spanish for ''Land of flowers''. History The town was founded in 1907 and, in 1949, the politician Francisco Díaz Marchand presented a project to turn it into an independent municipality. The project did not prosper, but in 1960 Manuel Frías Morales drafted a law to carry out the feasibility studies for the foundation of the municipality, but the opinion was adverse. Later, the Law #30 of June 14, 1971 created the municipality of Florida, one of the youngest of the island. Ignacio Agramonte
Ignacio Agramonte y Loynaz (1841–1873) was a Cubans, Cuban revolutionary, who played an important part in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878). Biography Born in the province of Puerto Príncipe (what is now the province of Camagüey Province, Camagüey, kingdom of Spain) on December 23, 1841, to a wealthy family. He went to Barcelona, Madrid, and Havana to study law. On June 11, 1865, he graduated as a lawyer. He returned to Puerto Principe and married Amalia Simoni y Argilagos in August 1868, a woman who was the love of his life and whose family had considerably more wealth than his own. Agramonte stood tall at 6'2". He had fine brown hair, pale skin, and was an expert horseman and fencer. He had a fine moustache and not thick or bushy like it appears in many portraits. Rubén Martínez Villena (December 20, 1899 – January 16, 1934) was a Cuban people, Cuban writer and Cuban Revolution, revolutionary leader. He was born in Alquízar, in the La Habana province. Biography After graduating from the University of Havana Law School, Villena worked as a lawyer, and published poetry and short story, short stories in newspapers and magazines from 1917 until the late 1920s. In 1923, Villena was one of thirteen writers and artists participating in the "Protesta de los Trece" (Protest of the Thirteen), denouncing the government of President of Cuba, President Alfredo Zayas. This led to the foundation of the Grupo Minorista, a group of artists and intellectuals who became influential in Cuban culture and politics.
