Floribunda (rose)
Floribunda (Latin for "many-flowering") is a modern group of garden roses that was developed by crossing hybrid teas with polyantha roses, the latter being derived from crosses between '' Rosa chinensis'' and '' Rosa multiflora'' (sometimes called ''R. polyantha'').Phillips, R. and Rix, M., ''The Ultimate Guide to Roses'', Macmillan, 2004, p226 The idea was to create roses that bloomed with the polyantha profusion, but with hybrid tea floral beauty and colour range. The first polyantha/hybrid tea cross, 'Rødhætte' ('Red Riding Hood'), was introduced by the Danish breeder Dines Poulsen in 1907. It possessed characteristics of both its parent classes, and was initially called a Hybrid Polyantha or Poulsen rose. Poulsen continued this line of work in subsequent years, introducing several Hybrid Polyanthas such as 'Else Poulsen' in 1924. The plant is a compact, bushy shrub with light pink camellia-like flowers. It is disease resistant and blooms continuously from June to mid-October. History Cants of Colchester is the oldest firm of commercial rose growers in Great Britain. The company was founded by Benjamin Cant in 1765 under the name, 'Benjamin R. ''Rosa'' 'Cherish, (aka JACsal), is an orange-pink floribunda rose cultivar. Bred by William Warriner in the United States before 1977 and introduced by Jackson & Perkins in 1980, the rose was named an All-America Rose Selections, also in 1980. The stock parents are the floribunda roses, 'Bridal Pink' and 'Matador'. Description 'Cherish' is a medium bushy shrub, 3 to 4 ft (90-120 cm) in height with a 2 to 3ft (60-90 cm) spread. Blooms are 2-3 in (5-7 cm) in diameter, with 16-25 petals. Flowers have a mild scent, and have a high-centered, double bloom form. The flowers are borne singly or in small clusters. Meilland International SA is a family-owned rose growing business founded circa 1850. The business operates today out of the Domaine de Saint André in Le Cannet-des-Maures, Le Luc en Provence, Var, France with branches all over the world. History The Meilland Family is a multi-generational family of French rose breeders. The family's first rosarian was gardener, Joseph Rambaux, who first started breeding roses in 1850 in Lyon. He is best known for developing the Polyantha 'Perle d'Or'. His wife, Claudine and son-in-law, Francois Dubreuil, took over the family nursery after Rambaux died in 1878. Debreuil became a successful rose breeder and grower. In 1900, Dubreuil hired sixteen year old, Antoine Meilland, as a gardening assistant, working alongside Dubreuil's daughter, Claudia. ''Rosa'' 'Bonica 82, (aka MEIdomonac), is a shrub rose cultivar, bred by Marie-Louise Meilland in France in 1982. The cultivar was named an All-America Rose Selections winner in 1987. Description 'Bonica 82' is a medium bushy shrub, 3 to 5 ft (90—150 cm) in height with a 4—6 ft (121—182 cm) spread. Blooms have an average diameter of 2—3 in (5—7.5 cm) with a petal count of 26 to 40. The plant is excellent for use in the garden, in containers, cut flower, hedge or landscape. Buds are a rich, dark pink color. Flowers are bright, pale pink when they first open, and later fade to near white in warmer climates.
