Flamingo Land
Flamingo Land is a theme park, zoo, and resort located in Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire, England. Opened in 1959, it has been owned and operated by the Gibb family since 1978. History Flamingo Land Resort was established in 1959 when a cinema entrepreneur, Edwin Pentland Hick, sold his cinema chain and used the funds to purchase a bankrupt country club to use the land for a zoo. The site, which occupied nine acres, was initially called ''The Yorkshire Zoological Gardens''. A colony of flamingos were among the first animals to be housed on site. In 1963, the gardens became home to the UK's first captive bottlenose dolphins – one of whom was given the name Sooty after the children's TV puppet. During the 1960s a small funfair began to be held on the site. Gordon Gibb
Gordon Gibb is the CEO of Flamingo Land Ltd and former chairman of Bradford City Football Club. Personal Gordon Gibb was born in November 1975 at Strathaven in Scotland, moving to Yorkshire when his father, Robert Gibb, a former professional footballer, set up the family run theme park Flamingo Land. Gordon continues to live in Yorkshire with his five children, but retains close links with his Scottish roots. His father Robert Gibb died in 1995 when Gordon was 18 years old, after a car accident on his way to an emergency board meeting at Hamilton Academical Football Club where he was chairman. Gordon and his two sisters, Vicky and Melanie took over the responsibility of the family business. Pleasure Island Family Theme Park
Pleasure Island Family Theme Park was a theme park in Cleethorpes, North East Lincolnshire, England. It was commonly known as Pleasure Island. The park opened on 27 May 1993. It was originally a subsidiary of Flamingo Land Ltd. Pleasure Island became independent of Flamingo Land in May 2010 and was owned and operated by DewarSavile Enterprises Ltd until closing at the end of the 2016 season. History Pleasure Island Family Theme Park stood on the site of the former Cleethorpes Marineland and Zoo. Owned and operated as a satellite zoo of Flamingo Park, and later by Scotia Leisure, the zoo had such attractions as dolphins, sea lions and pelicans. The zoo closed in 1977. The site was sold to Pleasureworld, a division of RKF Entertainment, who announced that a new theme park would be built, as a sister park to the Pleasurewood Hills park near Lowestoft and bearing the same name. Vekoma Rides Manufacturing is a Dutch amusement ride manufacturer. Vekoma is syllabic abbreviation of Veld Koning Machinefabriek (Veld Koning Machine Factory) which was established in 1926 by Hendrik op het Veld. History The company originally manufactured farm equipment and later made steel constructions for the coal mining industry in the 1950s. As business shifted from farming equipment to steel construction, Veld Koning Machinefabriek was shortened to Vekoma. After the closure of Dutch mines in 1965, Vekoma manufactured steel pipes for the petrochemical industry. In the 1970s Vekoma was contracted by U.S. amusement ride manufacturer Arrow Development to build the steel structure for its roller coasters in Europe. As demand increased, Arrow instructed Vekoma in track building techniques and eventually licensed its coaster-building technology. Suspended Looping Coaster
The Suspended Looping Coaster (or SLC, as referred to by coaster enthusiasts) is a model of steel inverted roller coaster built by Vekoma. There are at least 39 different installations across the world. The minimum rider height requirement is . Kumali
Kumali, installed 2006, is a Vekoma Suspended Looping Coaster (SLC), located in Flamingo Land Resort in North Yorkshire, England. The ride is an Shenlin model layout and has four inversions, including the cobra roll which overlooks a lake. It is named after the alpha male of the zoo's lion pride. In 2008 Flamingo Land added video recorders to each car so riders can purchase their own video of them on the ride as well as the on-ride photo. The themed Kumali ride music was written and produced by ElectricStreetPolice, a British TV composer by the name of Paul Bickerdike who has credits on TV and in film at Cannes. Kumali is currently only one of three operating Vekoma SLCs in the UK. ''The Odyssey'' at Fantasy Island Ingoldmells, Skegness, is the largest, and the other, ''Infusion'' at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, is the smallest.
