Nykøbing Falster (; originally named Nykøbing) is a southern Danish city, seat of the Guldborgsund ''kommune''. It belongs to Region Sjælland. The city lies on Falster, connected by the Frederick IX Bridge over the Guldborgsund (''Guldborg Strait'') waterway to the island of Lolland. The town has a population of 16,911 (1 January 2022). Including the satellite town Sundby on the Lolland side, with a population of 3,065 the total population is 19,976. Guldborgsund Municipality
Guldborgsund is a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in Region Sjælland in Denmark, created on 1 January 2007 from six (6) former municipalities on the two islands Lolland in the west and Falster in the east bordering the Guldborgsund strait. It covers an area of 903.15 km² (2013) and has a total population of 61,219 (1 January 2018). Its neighboring municipalities are Lolland to the west and Vordingborg to the north. Idestrup
Idestrup is a town some southeast of Nykøbing Falster on the Danish island of Falster. As of 2022, it has a population of 1,153. History Idestrup Church built in the Romanesque style dates from the 12th century. With its whitewashed walls, rounded windows and a red tiled roof it stands in the middle of the town. Other buildings of interest include the dairy from the late 19th century, the ''foramlingshus'' (community centre) from 1901 and the old people's home with a history going back to 1924. The town's development owes much to Edward Tesdorph, originally a farmer, who built a pump station to drain the area after a flood in 1872. He was behind the local high tension power station (1912) as well as the sugar refinery in Nykøbing. Gedser Odde
Gedser Odde on the island of Falster in the Baltic Sea is Denmark's southernmost point. The terminal moraine from Idestrup through Skelby to Gedser is part of the maximum glaciation line across Falster, from Orehoved to Gedser. Fronted by low cliffs, the ridge, high, continues underwater a further south-east to Gedser Rev. Sydstenen (the south stone) marks the southernmost point. Geology The coastal cliff at Gedser Odder is almost always exposed. The strata deposited during the last ice age can be clearly seen, but lake sediments have also been exposed, from the lowering of the terrain. The sediments from the postglacial period contain fossils of freshwater snails and mussels, evidence of a freshwater episode in the Baltic. The ice age strata consist mostly of moraines of clay and boulders deposited by the melting glacier. Traces of pink in the moraines come from red sandstone plucked up in the Baltic Sea. Gedser is a town at the southern tip of the Danish island of Falster in the Guldborgsund Municipality in Sjælland region. It is the southernmost town in Denmark, and also the southernmost point of Scandinavia and the Nordic countries. The town has a population of 657 (1 January 2022). It is an important port town on the Baltic Sea. History Overview Gedser Church was designed by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint and dates from 1915. Gedser was the first place German troops landed during the occupation of Denmark on April 9, 1940, at 3:55 in the morning. A number of armored cars and infantry troops hid in the ferry from Warnemünde, Rostock and advanced into the harbor as soon as the ship docked, soon after followed by another ferry.
