The frenulum of the penis, often known simply as the frenulum (from ) or frenum, is a thin elastic strip of tissue on the underside of the glans and the neck of the human penis. In men who are not circumcised, it also connects the foreskin to the glans and the ventral mucosa. The inferior labial frenulum, or ''frenulum labii inferioris'' (Latin, meaning "little bridle of the lower lip"). is the frenulum connecting the lower gums with the lower lip. Function The inferior labial frenulum, alongside the superior labial frenulum, provides stability to the upper and lower lip. Medical conditions Absence of the inferior labial frenulum and/or the lingual frenulum is associated with the classical and hypermobility types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, but can also be absent in those without any underlying medical conditions. Tearing of the inferior labial frenulum may occur after being bit, especially after a fall, resulting in bleeding and pain. A frenectomy is the removal of a frenulum, a small fold of tissue that prevents an organ in the body from moving too far. It can refer to frenula in several places on the human body. It is related to frenuloplasty, a surgical alteration in a frenulum. Done mostly for orthodontic purposes, a frenectomy is either performed inside the middle of the upper lip, which is called labial frenectomy, or under the tongue, called lingual frenectomy.
