Fred E. Gutt
Fred Ernst Gutt (October 10, 1919 – June 30, 2012) was a United States Marine Corps fighter pilot who became an ace in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Early life Fred E. Gutt was from Madison, Wisconsin, although he was born in Kronstadt, Romania. He was a 1941 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. World War II Gutt was assigned to Marine fighter squadron VMF-223. Initially flying Grumman F4F Wildcats, 2d Lt. Gutt arrived with VMF-223 on Guadalcanal on 20 August 1942, to operate as part of the Cactus Air Force. He was evacuated with the unit on 12 October. Reequipped with Vought F4U-1 Corsairs, VMF-223 returned to action in the Solomon Islands in 1943. On 28 December 1943, Gutt shot down three Japanese fighter planes in less than five minutes during a fighter sweep over Rabaul, bringing his score to seven. The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Designed and initially manufactured by Vought, Chance Vought, the Corsair was soon in great demand; additional production contracts were given to Goodyear Aerospace, Goodyear, whose Corsairs were designated FG, and Brewster Aeronautical Corporation, Brewster, designated F3A. The Corsair was designed and principally operated as a carrier-based aircraft, and entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy and Marines in World War II. Nakajima A6M2-N
The Nakajima A6M2-N (Navy Type 2 Interceptor/Fighter-Bomber) was a single-crew floatplane based on the Mitsubishi A6M Zero Model 11. The World War II Allied names for Japanese aircraft, Allied reporting name for the aircraft was Rufe. Design and development While waiting on the completion of the Kawanishi N1K, Nakajima was chosen by the Imperial Japanese Navy to provide an interim floatplane, which they did by modifying Mitsubishi's A6M-2 Model 11. Mitsubishi was not offered the contract as they were already overburdened. Nakajima proposed that they could churn out 900 aircraft in under a year. The design of the plane itself wasn't much different than the A6M-2 it was based on. The retractable, wheeled undercariage was removed and plated over. This was replaced by a large central float and one cantilever stablizer float under each wing. The Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" is a long-range carrier-capable fighter aircraft formerly manufactured by Mitsubishi Aircraft Company, a part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It was operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) from 1940 to 1945. The A6M was designated as the , or the Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen. The A6M was usually referred to by its pilots as the ''Reisen'' (, zero fighter), "0" being the last digit of the imperial year 2600 (1940) when it entered service with the IJN. The official Allied reporting name was "Zeke", although the name "Zero" was used more commonly.
