Foxy (Merrie Melodies)
Foxy is an animated cartoon character featured in the first three animated shorts in the ''Merrie Melodies'' series, all distributed by Warner Bros. in 1931. He was the creation of animator Rudolf Ising, who had worked for Walt Disney in the 1920s. The character is notable for his resemblance to Mickey Mouse, a similar character created by Disney in 1928. Concept and creation In 1925, Hugh Harman drew images of mice on a portrait of Walt Disney, a reminder of Disney's fondness for the rodents living at the Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. Disney and Ub Iwerks would then use it as inspiration for their creating Mickey Mouse, the character who eventually established Disney as a major figure in Hollywood, also sparking a wave of "clones" at competing studios. ''Merrie Melodies'' is an American animated comedy short film series distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. It was part of the ''Looney Tunes'' franchise and featured many of the same characters. Originally running from August 2, 1931, to September 20, 1969 (during the golden age of American animation), it was revived in 1979 with new shorts being sporadically released until June 13, 1997. ''Merrie Melodies'' originally placed emphasis on one-shot color films in comparison to the black-and-white ''Looney Tunes'' films. After Bugs Bunny became the breakout character of ''Merrie Melodies'' and ''Looney Tunes'' transitioned to color production in the early 1940s, the two series gradually lost their distinctions and shorts were assigned to each series randomly. Bosko
Bosko is an animated cartoon character created by animators Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising. Bosko was the first recurring character in Leon Schlesinger's cartoon series and was the star of thirty-nine ''Looney Tunes'' shorts released by Warner Bros. He was voiced by Carman Maxwell, Bernard B. Brown, Johnny Murray, and Philip Hurlic during the 1920s and 1930s and once by Don Messick during the 1990s. Creation and the first film In 1927, Harman and Ising worked for the Walt Disney Studios on a series of live-action/animated short subjects known as the Alice Comedies. ''One More Time'' is the second title in the ''Merrie Melodies'' series, and stars Foxy (Merrie Melodies), Foxy as a Prohibition-era cop. It was released as early as August 11, 1931. It is directed by Rudolf Ising. This is one of only three Merrie Melodies cartoons to star Foxy (Merrie Melodies), Foxy; the other two are ''Lady, Play Your Mandolin!'' and ''Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!''. Plot The cartoon shows police officer Foxy who deals with armed criminals, traffic violations, and Roxy's huge dog. The main action involves a group of gangsters kidnapping Roxy while making their getaway; Foxy chases them on a mechanical horse, rescues Roxy, and puts the criminals in jail—only to be shot in the back by a crow. Colorized Version A copy of the short was sent to South Korea in 1973 to be redrawn in color, being renamed ''On Duty''. However, the copy was missing its audio. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (also known as Oswald the Rabbit, Oswald Rabbit, and Ozzie) is an animated series, animated cartoon character created in 1927 by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. He starred in several animated short films released to theaters from 1927 to 1938. Twenty-seven animated Oswald shorts were produced at the Walt Disney Animation Studios, Walt Disney Studio. ''Trolley Troubles'' is a 1927 animated short subject film, produced by Charles B. Mintz and George Winkler and directed by Walt Disney. The cartoon is the first appearance of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, a character that Disney and Ub Iwerks created for Universal Pictures and Mintz. History In the early summer of 1927, Walt Disney finished the first Oswald cartoon, entitled '' Poor Papa'', but Universal was not very satisfied. They had expected a more Charlie Chaplin-like character and thought Oswald was too elderly and too fat. Disney agreed to make some changes and the cartoon was not released in theatres at the time. ''Smile, Darn Ya, Smile!'' is the third title in the '' Merrie Melodies'' series, and features Foxy. It was released as early as August 15, 1931. It is directed by Rudolf Ising. This is one of only three Merrie Melodies cartoons to star Foxy; the other two being '' Lady, Play Your Mandolin!'' and '' One More Time''. This short is a remake of '' Trolley Troubles'', a Disney short featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in whose creation Harman had once been involved. For the first time in a Warner Bros. cartoon, the short uses a gag, suggested by Bob Clampett, that has characters from the trolley's parody advertising posters ( Smith Brothers and others) come to life and perform a bit of business.
