Harbour Breton
Harbour Breton is a small fishing community on the Connaigre Peninsula in Fortune Bay, on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It is the largest center on the Connaigre Peninsula and was long considered the unofficial capital of Fortune Bay. During the 1960s many communities were resettled into Harbour Breton. English Harbour West is a village located on the south west shore of Fortune Bay. It is noted for its bank fishing and inshore fishing. The Way Office was established on April 1, 1866. Belleoram
Belleoram () is a village on the shores of Fortune Bay in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The community sits on a narrow strip of land hemmed in between the bay and steep hills that rise behind it. Belleoram has a large harbour and shelter from the sea, with the protection of a natural breakwater. History Belleoram, a fishing community, had a fish plant which closed in 1989. Aquaculture and fish farming are important economic drivers. Belleoram dates back to 1774. The French used the area and called it "Bande de Laurier." By 1713, the Treaty of Utrecht had forced the French to leave. In 1718, Captain Tavenor sailed around the south of Newfoundland and called it "Belorme's Place." Pool's Cove
Pool's Cove is a fishing village located on the north west side of Fortune Bay, on the South Coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Newfoundland, Canada. The town had a population of 188 in the Canada 2021 Census, 2021 Census. History & Town Information Historically, Pool's Cove has been an important location for the local fishing industry, and while fishing remains a part of its economy, the town has diversified in recent years especially in the logging industry. Rencontre East
Rencontre East is a small, outport community in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada located north east of Belleoram, and west of Terrenceville in Fortune Bay. The population was 115 in the 2021 census. This small community is not connected to any surrounding areas by road. Rencontre East is accessible by scheduled ferry service (MV Terra Nova) from ports in Pool's Cove (1 hour, 15 minutes) and Bay L'Argent (1 hour, 45 minutes). The MV Terra Nova takes 30 passengers. History The main industry is cod and lobster fishing. Rencontre East was the location of one of only a few molybdenum mines in Canada's history. English Harbour East
English Harbour East is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on the northeast side of Fortune Bay. Settled first by the Mi’kmaq of Newfoundland which used land on the "Neck" of the Harbour, they were joined in the early 1800s, by the English Dodge family and by Irishman Thomas Hynes Sr. European fishermen were first brought to the small community by English merchant family of Newman and Co. based in Harbour Breton, the firm of merchant John Gorman, and the Jersey firm of Nicholle and Co. Grand Le Pierre
Grand Le Pierre is a town in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The town had a population of 176 in the Canada 2021 Census. History During the 1990s, the council of Grand Le Pierre, led by Mayor George Fizzard, conceived a plan to establish a water bottling plant in the town. The plant would receive runoff water from Gisborne Lake, located within the town's area boundary, and then exported through a facility that was planned to be built in the town's harbour. Newfoundland's Premier at the time, Brian Tobin, first approved this plan but later retracted his approval, disallowing the project to continue, this decision sparked outrage in the community, as it was expected that 150 jobs were to become available if the plant was established. No considerations of reviving this project has been made in the years since its termination.
