Filipino Heritage Month
Filipino Heritage Month is a month-long celebration in Canada that takes place every June. The work for the declaration of Filipino Heritage Month was started by Paulina Corpuz of Toronto, Ontario, through a petition. Through the sponsorship of Councillor Neethan Shan, a motion was submitted at the City of Toronto Council and with the endorsement of about 50 people and organizations, the motion was approved by the council unanimouslyIt was finally declared in Canada on October 30, 2018, Motion M-155, through the authorship of MP Salma Zahid, Liberal MP, Scarborough Center. Filipino Canadians
The Filipino Canadians (); () are Canadians who have a Filipino descent or ethnicity. The Filipino Canadians is the second largest subgroup of the overseas Filipinos, surpassed only by the United States, and one of the fastest-growing minority in Canada. Only a small population of Filipinos lived in Canada until the late 20th century. At the 2016 Canadian census, 851,410 people of Filipino descent lived in Canada, mostly in urban areas. Ontario New Democratic Party
The Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP; , NPD) is a social democratic political party in Ontario, Canada. The party sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum. Neethan Shan
Neethan Shanmugarajah (Neethan Shan) (; born December 24, 1978), is a Canadian politician who represented Ward 42 Scarborough—Rouge River on Toronto City Council from February 2017 to November 2018. Shan was the first Tamil Canadian to sit on Toronto's City Council. Shan is currently the Chair of the Toronto District School Board (TDSB). Shan was elected to the TDSB in 2016 and again in 2022. Shan has sought public office 13 times since 2003; 8 of which were municipally and provincially, 5. He won 4 times: YRDSB Trustee in 2006, TDSB Trustee in 2016, Toronto City Councillor in 2017 and TDSB Trustee in 2022. Peter Tabuns
Peter Charles Tabuns (born October 3, 1951) is a Canadian politician who served as the interim leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party and the Leader of the Official Opposition (Ontario), leader of the Official Opposition from 2022 to 2023. He is a member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, first elected in a 2006 by-election to represent the riding of Toronto—Danforth (provincial electoral district), Toronto—Danforth. Marvin Rotrand
Marvin Rotrand (born 1951) is a former Canadian politician, last sitting as an independent. He previously served as a member of Montreal City Council, representing the district of Snowdon. Rotrand served on Montreal city council from 1982 until 2021, and was its dean for several years; he worked full-time in his duties. Rotrand was serving B’Nai Brith Canada as its national director of the League of Human Rights. Lionel Jonathan Perez (born 1970 in Montreal, Quebec) is a Canadian lawyer, entrepreneur and a former member of Montreal City Council for the Darlington district in Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grace.
